Dragon Spirit

Hi friends,
This is a 45" x 26" piece i recently completed in oils that i'd like to share with you. I've used myself as the model for the central figure. Comments are embraced, but for those who are critical, i'm right hear listening! heehee...

Nice Job!

Hi Marcus -

I really like this composition! It gives such an uplifting feeling, full of emotion. The colors add to the festive air and complement it well. Wonderful!

The only thing I am not sure I care for is the figure on the left. I think its drawing is not fully believable. Do you have an original photo reference you can post for comparison?

On second thought, try putting your fingers over the left-hand figure to block it out. Would this composition work better without it?

Thanks for the compliment Julie. I have been walking past my painting to and fro over the last couple of days, and that nagging feeling i had about the left figure grew, and what you said confirms it all. I think i'll have to leave it aside until i come back from my overseas assignment. I'm gonna try work on toning down the figure...in fact, now that you mentioned it, i just remembered that my initial value sketches did mean for that fella to be in the darker tones instead of what was being shown here! That's right...so good of you to mention it here, Julie. Thanks a lot!
