Unnamed
This is a figurative, oil, 30 x 40 inches.
What I like about it is the light. It is on my easel way in the back of the studio and even before the lights are on - it catches the eye.
I did this every fast and loose. The paint is thick in most places. Gobs of it on the rug. This was an experiment. I wanted it loose.
I am not satisfied with it yet though. Just not sure exactly what to change at this point. It looked better a week ago. I should have stopped.
Suggestions appreciated! Digital manipulations welcomed as well.

Kimberly,
This must have lost something in the digital translation, because rather than suggesting a study in light, it comes through as extremely dark overall -- so much so that it's rather difficult to comment on it in terms of value or hue. If I squint at this one, I lose pretty much the whole thing.
I could brighten it in Photoshop and repost, or you could, if you think that such an image would better represent the original.
Of course, if this image is accurate, then that's where we'll start.

Steven,
Here, I think this is a bit better.

Nice pose, nice light.
The first things that jump out at me for correction, though, are the dark cool areas near her mouth and nose that make it look like she has facial hair.
The second thing is that you should probably check the drawing and values of the upper chest and neck area. There's some distortion and harsh shapes there.
Finally, it seems as if the drapery is overmodelled (too much light in the darks, and too many dark areas in what should be in the light). Check out Bouguereau for great value control of white fabrics in both light and shade.
Can you post the reference photo and a face closeup of the ref and the painting?

Cool costume
Interesting costume, Kim. I like how it picks up the colors in the rug. Did you do the work from life, a photo, or a combination?
I'm too much of a newbie to comment on the technical aspects.

Here is the reference photo. I tried to change her look a bit - soften her, play down the age. I was trying to change the face enough that it would not be recognizable as her. I've already painted this friend, but needed a model - so she was it, but I did not want another painting of 'her'
Thanks for your comments Michele. I will look at all you mentioned.
Julie,
I just ordered this costume and a 'wench' type renaissance costume to try out some figuratives. I've been doing this from the photo so far.
