I just took a pastel workshop which wasn't especially helpful in teaching me how to feel comfortable with the medium but I got a lot of information about the materials. The instructor, who's a wonderful pastel artist, uses a respirator, especially when he's spraying fixative. I think he often uses a simple mask when painting, although interestingly enough he didn't wear anything while working with us and doing a demo. So that may be an ideal mode which he doesn't often utilize.
Another tip he mentioned was that if you paint with your support vertical, at an easel, you can tilt it forward slightly and the pastel dust will fall away from the paper and onto the tray of the easel. It keeps the painting cleaner and the colors clearer. In a different workshop it was suggested that we pick up a plastic pipe and cut it in half through the center so the pad or paper and board could rest in the trough that the half-pipe makes and the pastel dust could be collected there for easy disposal and clean-up.
Hope that helps!
