All,
Prior to these two drawings of my daughter, I have only done 5 other sketches in the last two months. As stated in the introduction Forum and with the pastel I posted in the "Unveilings - Open to all Members" section, it

Kevin, these are delightful drawings. I am not a fan of stumping usually, but here you have achieved bold drawings. The subjects are lacking a strong light source, which makes graphite drawing a bit difficult. This is typical of most photographs. I would like to see you work from a subject which has a more specific light source.
How long did they take? What is your background in art?

I'm glad you like them. I did them about a month ago. Prior to these two drawings I had not put pencil to paper for 10 years. During the two months prior to these I did several sketches and nearly gave up after the first. What an experience!
I posted two pastel portraits completed after these two drawings. The first post being "it

I like the one you just posted better then the realism. It is more sponteneous. You know, the art is more in the limitations than the freedoms and excesses.
I use 4b. Only 4b. Hair? 4b. Shading? 4b. Eyes? 4b. 4b or not 4b. 4b.
I use a sandpaper block to sand the lead to a chisel. It gives me more flexibility with the line. The 4b is hard enough so that it does not break under pressure, but soft enough to really perform.
You will progress so much faster if you force a time limit. It will cramp your style - that's what style is.
