Slide registers

I've been reading books about how artists can expand their business. They suggest getting your work included in slide registers kept by the various organizations. Then when a group wishes to commission a work of a certain type, they can look through the register to identify appropriate artists.

Does anyone have information on registers of this type that would be relevant to portraitists/figurative painters, especially as pertaining to the Northeast? It occurs to me, incidentally, that the registers kept these days may not involve slides anymore, but newer and easier formats.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
