"Somewhere. . ."

Hi everyone,

This is my most recent painting finished last week. It will be my second entry into the Indiana State Fair. It's oil on linen and measures 36" X 24". I've been mounting my linen onto panels and for this particular one I cradled the back.

My model for this painting is my next door neighbor. She is a young (very young) mother and thankfully agreed on the spot to model for me at very short notice. I took the reference photos just an hour before sunset in order to get that warm light.

As I was painting this I kept thinking about the look in her eyes. I thought she might be dreaming of a place where someday she will be able to take care of her family on her own and not with extended family members all around.

Thanks,
Julie

Hi Julie! I'll bite! I am impressed with your constant improvement and obvious effort to push yourself with each painting For this one there are a few things in particular that I see you have taken further. First, I adore the overall warm and sunny color. It works very well with her hair and the mood. It's so dawn-like. Do you know what I mean? This one of yours contains my favorite background so far. I love the painterly touch you have put into it and the color/value transition from the left to the right looks wonderful. I could go on but let me wrap up by saying that you have done an excellent job carrying the colors through the painting. The warmth in the highlights in the dress flows so beautifully through the painting..and by the way, that dress is so well done. Keep up the good work. I can't wait to see what you do next.

Oh, good luck at the fair as well.

Hi Lisa,

Thank you for your very nice comments! I'm glad you like the color scheme and background I used for this painting. The lighting/color elements were ones I really wanted to play up for this. It was my hope that the background would really "pop" her out, yet at the same time keep her grounded in the painting. I appreciate your mention of it!

Thanks again, I'm a big fan of your work!

Julie
