Jim H 20" x 24" oil

This is the completed portrait that was shown before it was finished in another topic dealing with the problem of painting teeth. It will hang in a music academy to honor the subject who had a lot to do with establishing this same academy. Not able to pose for the painting I relied on old photos and my recall of this gentleman who worked at one time with me at the same corporation. Response by his family was emotional.

Re: Jim H 20" x 24" oil

Great job, Jim.

It's very hard to achieve right hues and values when working from a photo, and at the same time to avoid all pitfalls lurking along the way. One of the main things in portrait painting, IMO, besides rendering the likeness (it goes without saying) is not letting that your sitter looks like a lifeless wax doll.

This gentleman has a character, and that quality (the psychological insight, not just accurate rendering of the sitter's features: every talented art student in this world can achieve a likeness) I don't notice that often in contemporary portraiture, no matter how famous the artist is. There are many painters, but very little artists, IMO.

I would like to see a close-up of the face, though.

Jim,

Excellent piece! Congratulations!

I was wondering if you could post a close up of the portrait.

Administrator's note: see the thread on "teeth Showing" and a detail of this gentleman's teeth here http://forum.portraitartist.com/show...0&pagenumber=3

I would have found this fellow very difficult to do. Your painting is tremendous!

Beautiful portrait!
