Theo

This is a portrait of my father-in-law, Theo. Frans Hals is one of my favorite's of the "Old Master's". I am always in awe of his brush work and his uncanny ability to capture "the moment". I wanted to try to attempt a quick Frans Hals type of portrait of my father-in-law. The key is to work with speed and precision along with capturing the gesture. I wanted as few brush strokes as possible for this one. This is probably his most well known characteristic, the grin after just having told one of his many jokes.

My initial step was to have him turn his head in the posed position and quickly draw him with a brush. I then would say things to him to get him to laugh so I could quickly capture the expression. The entire painting took 2-1/2 hrs.

I think I will be attempting many more of these.
