Grandma's Blanket

I am posting this picture because it is my first finished portrait using Karin's glazing technique. I am looking for input before I go on to my human subjects ;) I wandered a bit from the Old Master palette in the blanket. Please make any comments on technique, composition, etc. I am a rookie and all critisism is accepted!

It is on 12 x 16 Canson paper. I wish now that I had done it on canvas, but I was experimenting. BTW it is not as dark as it appears here but I was looking for a low-light effect (he's sleeping - a rarity)

Hi Sandy,

I like the sleeping dog, and the colourful accents of the blanket.

One comment to make: what I miss in the dog is the 'roundness' of the dog. It's in the way you render the shadows. It's in the transition from dark to the light.

Hi Sandy,

This is a lovely portrait of your dog. I really like the angles that are made by the edges of the blanket and the arm of the sofa on our right. They work well.

I think you did a nice job of capturing the fur on the dog. You must be very proud of this!

Peter, Thanks for the critique. I'm not sure what you mean by "roundness". Could you mean the shadow in the hind quarter and the right front leg? This little guy is 17 lbs. of muscle and there isn't much round about him, but I think I get your meaning. I will look at it again.

Joan, Thanks for your kind comments. I do like the picture. In fact, I may frame this one. Too bad I can't get a comment from the dog! :sunnysmil . BTW, I've been hoping to see the progress of your Sargent.
