A Duty to Dream

This is a recent portrait commission I completed of Edward Hammond, President of Fort Hays State University in Kansas. It measures 36" by 48". In this portrait I am trying to achieve three things, (a) getting a physical likeness (which is the easiest of the objectives), (b) visually communicating something about Hammond

Nice work, Clive! I like the fresh colors and expression on the face in particular. Any chance of showing us a closeup of his hands too?

Julie,

Here they are together with the dinosaur egg. Thanks for your comments.

Thanks, Clive. Very realistic!

I bet this gentleman was very happy with his portrait.

Clive, I always enjoy seeing your new work. You bring a fresh approach to the commission. In asking yourself how you can satisfy the client while incorporating your own ideas, you really go far beyond the nuts and bolts.

My favorite thing is the wonderful color, crisp clarity, and the humanity in the face and gesture of the subject. I also love how you have thoughtfully and imaginatively incorporated the symbolism. I admit I'm still looking for the Pteranodon, but it'll give me something to do. (Any hints?)

Alex, I was in two minds about including the Pteranodon, I did not want to trivialize the portrait nor did I want to detract from the sitter. So I placed it in the middle distance just above the trees in the landscape behind the building.

Clive, I do like this handsome, engaging, and narrative portrait. Your mission is accomplished.
