Lighting used for reference photography

Hello,
I take my reference photos with a Canon Rebel SLR digital camera. I usually rely on natural lighting for my photos, but I would like to be able to shoot when I don't have good natural lighting. I recently bought a flash that is attached by a cord to the camera, but it is akward to try to hold the flash, focus and shoot. I would be interested in knowing what others do for their lighting needs.

I'm using a softbox pretty regularly (Interfit). This brand has a fan to cool the light, and since it gets hot, it's better for the mechanism, I think.

I like the soft effect this light gives. It's a continuous light softbox, and uses a halogen light, which leans much towards the red end of the spectrum: a deep blue filter on it makes it a more neutral color.

Julie,
Thanks for the quick reply. I looked up the Impact softboxes and was surprised to see such a wide range of prices and styles. I think I may need to do a ittle research on this. Do you mind telling me which model you use?

Here's a link to the one I use:

I can't get the link to take you to the exact model:

go to "continuous 3200k lighting", then Stellar Halogen , then to INTERFIT Pro 1000 watt Halogen Single head Softbox kit

There's a lot of good brands and types out there...best wishes as you research.

Looking at the site now, I like their CoolLite softbox. That may be a better choice. The reason? 5200k is closer to an ideal color balance than mine (that needs to be manipulated.) The newest one, Cool Lite 9, has enough power (1000 watts).

I am not intending to be a salesperson for this company. There are lots of good brands out there. But I do like their product.
