Oil, 18" X 14"


This oil portrait was done from life at a workshop in December with Bill Ewing here in West Chester, PA. He uses a very limited palette which was helpful to me since I am just beginning to use oil.

I would very much appreciate any advice/comments. Thank you. Elizabeth

Very nice work!
I am sure you'll love using oil as you go.

On the portrait, the forehead seems to be a little flat especially above the eyebrows. In my opinion it needs to turn a bit more by toning down the tone on the right of the head perhaps by using a more neutral tone. Same thing could be said about the area above the mustache on the same side. The value seems too bright and makes it come forward more than it should. I would watch for the brighter values, especially the one on the chest by the v-neck. If the light source is located above the head, the highlight on the neck competes with the ones on the forehead and the tip of the nose.
I would also check the right shoulder: seems a bit wide

Thank you very much for your critique which helps me a lot. I can see each point that you make, and I will work on it more with those ideas in mind.
