Would you help me choose the best reference for my first portrait of my new baby girl? I plan to sketch her in charcoal. Thank you!

And one more...

Hi Mara,
I would go for the third one from the top and maybe darken the pillow behind the baby, like in your # 2 post. She is lovely.

I would also choose the third from the top.

This one!

I would lose the mattress behind her and make the background more tonal, but not too dark.

I agree with Marvin, Fourth one.

Mara Schasteen 12-16-2008 12:53 AM

Does it get any cuter?

Well, I may be biased, but she is darn sweet, isn't she? I am leaning toward number 4, as suggested by Claudemir and Marvin, but I do love her mouth/lips in number 3. This is tough. #4 is a unique pose for a potrait. Any advice or concerns welcome.

PS - How about that "stick on" hair bow?

She is indeed.

I think that the composition is great, just center her head and make the background changes as suggested.
What is the size of the paper?

Mara Schasteen 12-16-2008 01:22 PM

Claudemir, I planned to make this drawing 11 x 14, but I am going to practice a couple before I go for it on good paper. I'll post my first sketch when I get it done (hopefully today sometime if my kids give me a quiet moment).

Though her mouth is cut off I would go with #4, personality is oozing out of that image!!! I like the lighting as well, not too harsh.
