A sketch I did last year, but came across it again today. One of my students... I did it as a demo and only had about 45 minutes to complete it. The eyes are a little off, but I still like the feel of it, and it pretty much looks like her.

I am really ashamed at how few of these (life drawings) I do. I should be doing these every day! I'm now convinced that drawing/painting from life is a must. Anyway, that's where all the fun is!!

Sweet kid, lovely drawing. Yes, I agree, painting and drawing from life is more fun!

David:

Really like this! You have captured the feel of the lighting in a wonderful way. :)

David,

As always, a lovely and sensitive drawing.I s it charcoal?

David Draime 07-03-2008 01:41 PM

Michele, Michael, Chris, thank you so much.

Yes, Chris, it's charcoal w/ white highlights on Canson paper. Knowing I only have 45 minutes, I always feel a bit rushed doing this kind of sketch. If I have 2 - 3 hours, then I can take the time to be more accurate in the placing of features. But it's all good. I just have to find some models who will be willing to sit for me.

This is a lovely job, David - 45 minutes is a really short time. I'm impressed! Sensitive and judicious use of highlights, too.

Just lovely! I agree with you that painting from life is a must!

Great drawing, David! Considering you had only 45 minutes, I would say it is incredibly accurate. It has that direct energy--not fussed over but thoughtful.

Linda, Dianne, Alex, thank you so much.

At my school, the periods are 55 minutes long, so once everybody is settled and working, I'll pull aside a student as a guinea pig. That usually leaves me about 45 min. I do feel rushed in that time frame. I think for the way I work 2 - 3 hours is way more comfortable. But 45 min. is a good test! These drawings from life, I don't do them nearly enough - I should try to do at least one every day.
