Ahh, painting from life.

To paint another human being from life is one of the greatest joys I've found. I often paint these in my studio but these were painted at The Palette And Chisel in Chicago.

The two horizontals are 8 " high by 16 " wide and the vertical is 40 " high by 30 " wide. All are oil on linen and done in one session. The 30 by 40 is actually done in 2 hours because the model change her mind about being able to hold the first pose. That's part of painting from life, the curve balls.

These are so lovely, Clayton, and your bold painterly style is very alive.

I am wondering: how much of your life work is commissioned portraiture and how, exactly, do you manage live sittings with clients (not models)?

Hi Clayton,

I don't know how I missed these! I really like the horizontal format, and your clarity with regard to color haronies - thanks for posting:)

Clayton,

These have so much energy. I love the colors and the brush strokes. They are a joy to look at.
