16" x 20" Oil. I executed this in class taught by Laurel Stern Boeck. Four 3-hour sessions allowed plenty of exploring, and some creative license with the background. The model inspired the idea of a lover sailing off. I think it borders on looking like a book cover illustration [not my objective]. Although it is signed, I'd be happy to make changes. Thank you in advance for commenting. [Note: For some reason, the sitter's left eye looks larger in the digital photo than on canvas.]

First, thank you very much for your critique of my painting. :) I like the movement of the hair and the looseness of your brush strokes. One thing that I noticed is the gaze. The eyes do not seem to be looking in the same direction. Cover each eye and see if you agree with me. Also, not being able to see the model I may be wrong, but her lower jaw seems a bit forward like she has an underbite. I hope this helps.

Thank you, Renee! See if the eyes look improved in detail. I think the problem may have been the highlight. I also added some lid to left eye. Better?
The jaw actually is as you see here. She does have an underbite. Unfortunately, this model charges additional for photos. Alas, I do not have one to work from, so I have to be careful now. Thank you so much for your help! |
The eyes look better! I understand about the underbite. In the portrait I recently posted, the "judging committee" said the the ears were too low on his head. If you looked at the resource photo, his ears ARE too low on his head! Your painting looks great-- very fresh colors and brushwork.

Your form, brushwork and palette all remind me of Edward Hopper's work. I like the atmosphere.
Just out of curiosity (I'm trying to figure out how to best photograph artwork with a digital camera), how did you light the painting when you were photographing it? |
Thank you Renee and Mari!
I'm not known for the best digital images, however, I find I get the best results during the day in my studio with the painting on easel, plus select overheads in front, and a spot bounced off the ceiling. |
What great fun to paint from life! I have never done it. Nice job! It must be a rush.
My thoughts would be regarding the eyes - perhaps they are a bit small, and perhaps they are too far apart (going by the old rule - one eye length apart between the tear ducts.) This is a common tendancy when the head is turned 3/4 away like this. Perhaps that is why you seem to struggle with them. The highlights just tend to emphasize the small problem, which may not even be a problem. At any rate, I don't know how painting from life is. I would like to try it. I would probably never be able to post an oil I did from life at this time! :) |
Nice and color and edges - really nice cools and warms together!

Same model?
Jeanine,
I know it's been a while since this was originally posted, but while perusing Gandy Gallery's website, I came across a Steven Levin painting that looks like he painted the same model. Here's the link if you're interested: http://www.gandynet.com/art/Masters/...s/Serenity.htm |

Dear Mari,
Thank you for referring me to that beautiful portrait! Different model. Very best, Jeanine |
