An Interesting Composition

This is a recent commission that is in its final stages. It is a charcoal 39cm x 53cm + mat and frame.

A few months ago friends asked me to photograph their wedding. Besides the actual family and guest with the bride and groom photos, I took casual shots of guests as well as family members. Most photos were taken outside being it was a cool but sunny day. I posed these two for this shot and took other shots of sentimental poses. Nearing the 20th of December I receive a call from this young man asking me if I would do a portrait and if I could have it done by the 25. I told him that I would be happy to do a portrait of them and I cringed when he told me that it will be a surprise gift for his soon to be wife. He said, "I remember that you took photos of us". As color photos go, the photos I shot of them outside were grate but not ideal at all for a reference. He is coming over to see it in the next few days and when he will have a chance to comment or make suggestions for possible adjustments.

All comments and suggestions are welcome.

Mischa,

I think you've done a wonderful job with whatever reference photos you have, especially considering the fact that you didn't know you would be using the photos for a portrait.

The only thing I would work on more would be the integration of the heads with the background. Right now they seem to be too much like cutouts. I would like to see more modeling of facial structure and turning of the side planes into the space around the heads. Of course I realize you probably are struggling with the references which may not give you adequate information, but it would be nice to see a fuller value range.

Alex, thank you for taking the time, a fresh eye is always appreciated.

Yes, I do agree with your suggestion and will make some adjustments. Both subjects are fare skinned, blond and creating the dark shadows did not work well in this case. So, making the changes you suggested will make a big difference.

Good looking out.
