"It must be said that each one of the arts has suffered during this past century of cultural experimentation, but none has taken a hit quite like the visual arts. From sculpture and painting to architecture and city planning, classical design has been sacked as surely as Rome itself - only this time by hordes of art dealers, academicians and industrialists intent on burying centuries of accumulated knowledge and leaving behind no trace of old world charm or mastery." - D. Jeffrey Mims, painter
This is an excerpt from the museum catalog for an exhibition opening in Atlanta this weekend at the Oglethorpe Museum of Art. In a rare arrangement, director Lloyd Nick has invited James F. Cooper, editor of the American Arts Quarterly, Dr. Gregory Hedberg, director of European Art at Hirschl & Adler Galleries, and D. Jeffrey Mims, painter and director of Mims Studios School of Fine Art to co-curate a show of contemporary traditional painting. You may request a low-resolution pdf of the exhibition catalog from the Classical Design Foundation (link below); it will soon be available through the museum's website.

Because its always cause for a celebration when a contemporary university museum hangs a show devoted to contemporary realism, here's a link to the Oglethorpe homepage.

In 1995 they hung a fantastic show titled "The Spirit and the Flesh: Contemporary American Realists," paintings by Ben Long, Richard Maury, D. Jeffrey Mims, and Nelson Shanks.

That catalog is also still available at the Oglethorpe site and is a steal at $15.
