Great Online Frame Source

I can't say enough good things about a vendor I've turned to for frames, now that I'm pushing 52 and -- duh -- have accepted that life is too short to do everything by yourself and that some DIY obsessions are wasteful rather than frugal, efficient, or satisfying in execution and results. (Plus, I need to get out more.)

I'm not easily impressed, but this outfit qualifies. The business is called Frame Fit Co. , at www.framefit.com. It can take a little while to get the hang of navigating through the online "catalog," but it's worth it. You can play around and get estimates of various styles and format sizes without making any purchase.

Be sure you check the "profile" of the frame style you select. This will show the presence and depth of ridges and coves and steps, and also the rabbet depth. A 1/2-inch rabbet depth isn't going to do, if you have a canvas mounted on heavy-duty stretchers.

They cut to your exact specifications, which is especially great if you sometimes use a format that fits your subject (23.25" x 17.5", say), instead of forcing a subject into a standard size. You can order them assembled, but I don't -- it saves a little money and to assemble them all you have to do is tap some retainers into the back of the corners.

The mitre cuts are absolutely perfect and clean, there's a paint touch-up, and it all goes together swell.

I second Steven's commendation for Framefit! I've been ordering from them for about five years, they're a great company to work with. The orders always arrive quickly and in good shape, and they're always willing to answer my sometimes stupid questions. I've gotten both the assembled and unassembled frames and they all looked great! Good prices too!
