PVA sizing, Rabbit Skin Glue?
 

I want to experiment with different supports but I want to be sure that I'm sealing it correctly. I do have some questions that I figured that you all could answer. I tried looking up the answers in previous threads but the questions were a bit different then what I had in mind.

I've heard conflicting ideas so I wanted your opinions. Which is better for sizing a canvas, hardboard, or thick paper; PVA sizing or Rabbit skin glue?

I think that I have an idea of how to use the RSG from other threads but I was wondering about the PVA sizing. How much do you dilute the PVA sizing? I've read everything from 1 part PVA sizing and 1 part water to 1 part PVA sizing to 10 parts water.

How long do you usually let the sizing (both PVA and RSG) dry before applying gesso?

Here's some differences between RSG and PVA:

RSG shrinks much more in its transformation from a liquid to a solid than does PVA;

RSG when fully cured has a higher adhesive strength than does PVA;

RSG at proper temperatures, due to its lower surface tension will have better absorbtion than PVA;

RSG is more expensive and more difficult to handle than is PVA.

That's just a few things. Your choice should be dictated by specific application. I reccomend RSG for sizing canvas and hardboard. For paper I use geletin as it doesn't shrink nearly as much.

I prefer RSG.

I wait until it is ready for sanding, usually 8 to 10 hours, I apply two coats of glue before the gesso.
