Shipping Question
 

A friend who has a custom handbag company asked me to paint a 16-/2 x 23-1/2 (unframed) canvas which will be made into a zippered bag. The painting is finished and ready to be varnished, but I am wondering how long I need to let it dry before shipping it to her. I plan to use picture varnish on it unless someone has a better idea.

I live in the New Mexico high desert and am wondering if it would be dangerous to roll the canvas in a couple of months and overnight it to her in a tube. If so, can you recommend when and how I should send it. If not, what should I do?

I guess I question the idea of making a painting into a custom handbag in the first place. The flexing and scuffing that will occur will greatly damage the painting over a short time, far more than any damage in shipping it, I would think.

Copies or original?
 

Carol, will the original be used or will it be copied onto a piece of leather or fabric? I realize this is off the subject of shipping, but I'm really curious.

Thank you both for your replies. It is my understanding that a clear protective coating of some sort is put over the painting as the bag is being fabricated. However, I'm not sure as I didn't get into it since I did this strictly as a favor for a friend. Many other artists are participating in this series and I believe their work is mostly acrylic although I don't know what difference that type of paint would make, if any, as I don't use it.

Carol, I am most fascinated about what kind of painting will go onto a purse. Would you post your work? The bags BETTER go for an huge price with all that work.

Hi, Carol,

The company (tutelahandbags.com if you're interested) is doing a series of bags with dog paintings. Go figure. Although the 2 images I'm uploading are on one piece of canvas, they are painted upside down from one another so when the bag is folded up and zippered on 3 sides, briefcase style, they will each face the correct way.

Hope this explains the situation better, but I still could use some help re shipping this darn thing.
