A Young Lady

There are so many great paintings on display at SOG, I find it a little intimidating posting my work, but here goes anyway.

Just recently completed this portrait, I used a monochrome underpainting with this one, in the past I have been painting alla prima. So I thought I would try something new for a change. This is oil on canvas, 12 X 16.

You needn't be shy to post, your work is great in my opinion!

Simply beautiful.

Yes, I agree! No need to be shy. I think you have a lovely painting here. I particularly like the warmth of the skin tones. I think they are gorgeous.

Claudemir Bonfim 07-18-2005 01:05 PM

Hi Henry,

I liked it very much, specially the skin tones.

Henry Wienhold 07-19-2005 07:40 PM

Thanks

Lacey, Lisa, Claudemir, Thank you for the kind words. I'm not shy I'm just chicken, does that make sense? :)

Never the less a walk through the SOG is a very humbling experience.

Dear Henry,

I am always glad to see you post! I think that your oil and acrylic work have a different quality from each other - is that perhaps because this work is newer, or do you find the mediums behave differently?

Thanks for sharing your work!

Oil vs Acrylic

Thank you Chris, the big difference between oil and acrylic is drying time, acrylic is less forgiving, but acrylic paint has such vibrant color, its a dissapointment that it's so difficult to blend when painting a portrait. The acrylic portrait that I placed here in the recent past was my attempt to find a way to blend the edges and make soft transitions, so I used a stippling technique.

I prefer oils, when I work on a acrylic painting whether it be a portrait, or a landscape I find myself missing that familiar oil paint aroma, which I have grown so accustomed to over the years.

I know just what you mean, Henry.

I love the smell of solvent in the morning. (Oops wrong movie)

Henry,
Nicely done. I really like your acrylics as well. Because of allergies to solvents and oil paint binders I can only work in acrylic paints. Love the oils but they don't love me.

Anyway, I found I could increase open time on acrylics by having my piezo electric humidifier wafting over the canvas, spraying the back of the canvas periodically with a mister and mixing my paints with Golden's Acrylic Glazing medium (up to 50%). Hope that helps you with the blending in acrylics.

Henry Wienhold 07-21-2005 11:49 PM

Thank you Richard, I like the idea of spraying the back of the canvas with water when working with acrylic paint, excellent idea, that method never occurred to me. Goldens Acrylic glazing medium, I would be lost without it.
