Andy

Hi,
This is a little 11"x14" of my nephew Andy, who was then 2 years old. I had been taking photos of his mother, when he stepped in, curious as to what was going on, and I snapped a couple photos of him. I did this painting in preparation for a larger painting of his whole body. There's two slightly shifted light sources, which hopefully show in his eyes, plus some reflected light on the opposite side. Although this was a quickie, I had some difficulties modeling features, particularly his nose, which is still a little flat on the underside. I'd like to say my difficulties stemmed from the lighting, but well... |
HI Holly!
This is a nice study and other than what you were already mentioning there is one spot that is really bugging me. Look at Andy's left side, our right side, of his forehead, it's not turning back with the rest of his head. It looks as if that poor little boys head is flat. It is almost the same value all the way across from above his left brow to where it should be turning and going around to the back of his head. If you get the forehead turning then maybe that will help resolve the rest of your painting. Remember, the area that is bothering you, may not be the problem at all. Put your hand over his forehead and then remove it. See the difference? Now look at the hair on that side to his ear too! If you just cover that area, there it is again. It is flat and not turning. It seems to be just value issues. A few tweaks here and there and you'll have it. Over all it is a very good solid piece and the drawing is well done! |
I love the wonderful gaze of this little boy - you have really captured his spirit !!

Hi Lynn. Thanks for taking the time to point out those issues, I appreciate it. Thanks Jane. Although the reference material was not the best, I just couldn't resist his gaze, the openness of a little kid can be so enticing.

This is lovely and I especially like the background/hair - it has a nice feel to it.

Beautiful Holly,
I love the soft edges and the background color. I think once you get those issues with his little nose worked out this will be perfect. |
Thanks Kim and Mike.
