Varnish before delivery?

If you have a commissioned portrait, do you make the client wait 6-12 months after painting is complete so you can varnish it before handing it over to them? Or do portrait artists not usually varnish the final work?

I usually put a coat of retouch varnish on the painting before it leaves my studio and then suggest that the customer bring it back in about 8 months. I explain the reason for varnish and tell them there is no extra charge, and that the varnish is optional.
I have found this to be an excellent way to keep in touch and it becomes a marketing tool. When they return for the varnish they may be ready to discuss a small "followup" painting or a pet portrait etc. It is also an opportunity to remind them to mention me to their friends and/or co-workers, and give them additional business cards. By making the final varnish complimentary, the whole experience ends on a very positive note for them.
