A private piece I did for fun

Hi -

I have an older friend who once long ago lived a very luxurious life and still has some of the trappings. So - she posed for me and I had fun! Here is the photo of the finished painting. I had a print made of the slide. It's not perfect - they cut a little of the right hand side of the picture off and got some dark spots here and there, but my budget is pretty slim, so it will have to do....

Closeup of face

It's a little blurry, but will give you some idea.

That's very nice, Julie! I especially like your treatment of the dress and its fabric. I just wish I could see the face better; she looks lovely but she's too fuzzy for me to get a clear idea of her features.

Julie, this is SO nice!

Another try

Thanks Leslie and Michele -

The canvas is 24 x 36, so the head is only 5 inches tall, including the hair. I can't afford to keep taking pix at 10 a roll for development, but it is small enough that I was able to direct scan it. The scan is below.

Ick!

Oh, well. The colors are way off. So much for that. I don't have enough experience in color balancing.

Julie,

When is your birthday? We will all email your spouse, child, parent, or whomever is necessary to make them get you a digital camera!

I am very engaged with your composition, it reminds me of the Waterhouse images of the Lady of Shallot, weaving in her attic prison.

Gotta wait a year

Hi Chris -

Well, it was just in December, so gotta wait. However, the next time I want to take photos, I think I will drive two hours to a relative who has a brand new Canon Rebel digital AND she has a skylight to put the painting under. Maybe she can help me take any future photos. This whole film process has me very frustrated!

Clearly this is in the wrong section but here it is anyway:

In 2002, when I added up my expenses for tax time, I had spent well over $6K in film and processing.

I got my digital camera in April of 2003. I estimate my film expenses for 2003 to be around $500 (most of which was incurred prior to April). (I haven't yet figured out the detail.)

I doubt my full year 2004 expenses will equal the first 4 months of last year.

I second what Chris said. My digital camera cost me less than half of what I was spending each year in film and processing.

It was the best business purchase I ever made -- and cameras like the one I have are now a lot less expensive than they were back when I got mine.
