Submission for appraisal

Hello all,

This is a pastel of my wife's Granddaughter Chloe and her mother. Chloe was 4 hours old. I started drawing then painting in August of 2000. I won an Honourable Mention for my 3rd acrylic painting from North Light Books. Which bowled me over, I was so thrilled. This particular painting for your criticism was one of my first color pastels.

A lovely moment

You've captured a lovely moment! The drawing of the baby is particularly beautiful. On the drawing of the woman, I would darken down the teeth considerably so they fit in better with the lighting in the rest of the image. A very nice job, otherwise.

Nice work. You have captured a mother's joy in her newborn in a most intimate and sensitive way. I also like the composition and your choice of a nearly square format.

I agree with Michele in that the mother's teeth should be de-emphasized. I'd also like to see the contrast of the shadow lessened a little on those fabric folds in the background behind the mother (upper left)....foreground is OK.

Many thanks to you Karin and to Michele,

This pastel was given to Chloe's mother soon after I finished it. Sometimes The improvements needed or that can be made are apparent very quickly, as in your remarks with the teeth. The folds comment Karin I take seriously and will remember for future. This pastel was an early one, now Chloe is on the way to being 1 and I recently did one of her with Papa.

It is an honour to have your criticisms and I read them with respect and learning.
Thank you, and to future comments made. Jeff
