Here's "Bart Murillo" although I don't know off hand where you can find a view of the original. The part with the writing was done by first painting in a beige color, then glazing with burnt umber and linsed oil and finally adding the lettering which turned out to be pretty crooked.

Rochelle,

Who was the original artist? I didn't turn anything up on an internet search using the term "Bart Murillo."

I love this picture. It is another self portrait. The artist is Spanish and the painting was a gift to his children. The wording in Latin makes that declaration.

The comparison that I make in my mind is that Rembrandt was not too successful in his career or family life but is now one of the most famous artists ever. One of my teachers called him the best artist that ever lived. Bart Murillo was conventional, successful during his lifetime and managed to support a large family very well with his painting. He was known to be religious and practical, yet today he is not too well known.

I have edited this post to say now that the following site has very good information about "Bartolome Murillo":
