Daniel Greene Summer Workshop
I have signed up for Daniel Greene's workshop this July for two weeks in NY. This is the first time that I attend any art workshops or classes. I read the thread that was posted by Melinda Roeleveld, and got many tips from her as well as from Steven Sweeney! Thanks!
I am just wondering if anybody from this site is planning to attend Daniel Greene's workshop this summer. Mai |
If this is your first workshop, you're in for such a treat.... the luxury of being able to disappear from your life and immerse yourself in the role of studying from a living master is a very unique and precious gift. Take candid photographs, if you can force your mind off the intense track of focusing 110% on what he is saying/doing.
Consider bringing a small video camera, if you have one. It's so difficult to catch everything on the first pass. I remember during the Allan Banks workshop being incredibly in-tune to everything he said. He is a man of few words, in fact, is very self-effacing and not entirely comfortable with the role of teaching (we're the only group he currently teaches, and he comes down annually--I know, how was I so lucky to live in Sarasota?!) but the things he said very much still resonate. Have you seen Greene's video tapes? If you can view them, they'd be an excellent preparation for the two week course. You're going to have such a great time. Is the medium oil or pastels? |
Dear Mai,
You will have an incredible experience. The main advice I can offer is, seriously, get sleep. When you see Dan sitting during breaks, you sit too. Eat well, take vitamins. Having been through a week with Daniel Greene, and just this past week with Bill Whitaker, I can promise you that nothing prepares you for the sheer physical and intellectual exhaustion of taking workshops at this level. Unless you have recently been to base camp at Mt. Everest. And that would be carrying your French easel. With one hand. |
Thanks!
Thanks Mari and Chris for your advice. I am so eager yet nervous when I think of the workshop.
Yes, I do have his tapes and intend to watch them again before going to his workshop this summer. I will take my camera and video camera with me, because I know I won't be able to remember or digest all the things that I will learn at the class! It would be a real challenge for me because it will be my very first workshop, and also painting in front of other painters for the first time! It may sound silly but I am so used to paint by myself and with a model only! However, I am sure I will, and am determined to learn a lot from Mr. Greene as well as from other artists at the workshop :) Mai |
P. S. You really need to have ALL the materials that will be on the materials list, unless you are certain you can buy them there.
It was astonishing how many people brought the wrong things, or some small part of the list, and were confused about why they had such a hard time. |
Mai,
Could you please post details on this workshop. I have a non-Forum member requesting the information. Please include location, cost and contact information. Thanks |

I forgot to say that the workshop covers both oils and pastels. It is up to the individual to choose what medium to use. You can paint in oil in morning and pastel in the afternoon, or vice versa, if you prefer.

Mai - have you decided what medium you're going to work in?
|
Mari,
You did ask me in your previous post. Sorry I forgot to address that in my last post. I think I will go with oils with this workshop. Initially, I was going to paint with oils for the first week and pastels for the second week. I am still unsure of what to expect so, right now I am going for oils. I love both mediums, but if I have to choose one over another, I will go for oils. Do you have any suggestions? Mai |
