Recommended Workshops?
 

I was reading the list of instructors whose workshops Peggy had attended, under the "Workshop Woes" thread, and it occurred to me to ask others which instructors/workshops they would recommend.

Of course, the workshops given by our own SOG/Forum artists would all be very much worthwhile (Peggy's, Marvin's, William Whitaker's and many, many others, too numerous to mention....) But what about those workshops offered by renowned artists that those who are relatively new to this business may not be aware of?

If you could take a workshop with anyone currently painting and teaching in the United States or Canada, whose class would you take?

If I could take a workshop with anyone in the country, it would be with Marvin Mattelson. Guess what -- I am! Denise Hall and I have aquired the illustrious Marvin Mattelson for our summer workshop in North Carolina!

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity because Marvin never leaves New York! As a teacher, I don't think we could have found anyone better. Marvin is funny, knowledgeable, and a true gentleman -- he should have been from the South! ;)

Great question, Michele!

There are so many! I am looking forward very much to Bill Whitaker's workshop this spring, to start.

I have been fortunate to have studied with a number of wonderful painters, and I'd absolutely recommend:

Burt Silverman
Dan Gerhartz
Harley Brown

I've also learned a tremendous amount from Phil Beck, who teaches at the Scottsdale Artists School.

In addition to the many of the SOG artists Michele mentions, others - who may not be as familiar to the folks here - I'd really like to study with include:

Kim English (Wow! I think he is one of the best when it comes to composition)
Sherrie McGraw
Mary Massey
Scott Christensen
Allan Banks, too

I am extrememly interested in filling some gaps I have in still life, landscape and composition.

Ah, so much to learn, so many zip codes.

I vote for David Leffel or Greg Kreutz, who as I understand it, primarily teach in NY or the Southwest. The way Mr. Leffel handles portraits strikes me as a natural evolution of Rembrandt's later style. I'm working on one now ... without much success.

Just returned to the forum after I have been away for a period and saw your post about Marvin's workshop in Carolina. I asked for more info just now and then noticed this post about it being offered to only 20. Uh-Oh. :D

I am so afraid that he will have been filled as I may have noticed too late. I had hoped for not only one spot but maybe two as I have a friend who more than likely will be interested. Oh pooh.

Well, I guess I have only to wait and see.

By the way, which part of Carolina are you from? I have a daughter in Salsbury (sp?) and I lived in Charlotte 10 years ago.

It's not too late. We still have some spaces open, but this workshop has caused quite a stir! My email has been flooded and I know Denise has been busy returning emails and phone messages. Marvin dear, I didn't know you were SO popular! We may have to add some more spaces to keep up!

I have been talking with Denise yesteday via private messaging and she has filled me in somewhat.

I hope to attend along with a friend, so I suppose I need to know what we need to do to reserve a space for us. That is, unless Marvin has criteria about beginners. My friend is, I have to say, a beginner, has done only one portrait in a previous workshop but really has the desire to do so. Some instructors do not want this, but I really need to know early so I can decide how we do this (the stay there and all as we are in WV).

Thanks to all anyway by way of this site, because otherwise I would not know of this workshop early and I really love all the input here.

Marvin's criteria is that you have to know how to open a tube of paint and know which end of the brush goes on the canvas. Marvin is so open and encouraging that he said he would love to teach anyone who wanted to learn. It's hard to find someone who paints that well and knows how to teach. We are very fortunate to have him coming here.

Maybe we should call this the "Palette of Dreams" workshop.... I keep hearing voices.... "If you build it, he will come." ;)

The Minnesota River School of Fine Arts has many ongoing classes in figure, portrait, drawing, in atelier style teaching and do some workshops too. It's the nicest school (and newest) I've ever seen.

The Minnesota River School of Fine Arts is just south of Minneapolis, in Burnsville Minnesota. It's run by Pat Jerde, who studied with Atelier Lack. She hosts many weekly classes as well as workshops. http://websearch.cs.com/redir.adp?ap...2f&datasource=

Another excellent atelier is The Atelier Studio Program of Fine Art http://www.theatelier.org/index.php in Minneapolis, MN, which was founded and run by Atelier Lack graduates, Dale Redpath and Cyd Wicker. It is one of the best four year atelier programs in the United States, but also hosts summer workshops.
