NuPastel colors in Mr. Whitaker's demo?
 

First, I'd like to thank those of you who maintain the Forum and also those who graciously take the time to answer questions for students.

I'm a relative beginner in art and I've been racking my brain to duplicate the NuPastel colors found in Mr. Whitaker's pastel demonstration on his website. I happened to see this same discussion in another thread, yet the actual NuPastel colors were not given and since the most recent post within that thread was last month, I thought I'd ask again.

I know this might seem silly, but the reason it's important to me is that I've tried to duplicate the color of Mr. Whitaker's demo and have only come close using four shades of Conte. I just haven't been able to nail it with NuPastel, despite a number of trials and even developing a 'monochromatic color chart' with the earth NuPastels. I prefer working in the latter because they are, for me, easier to sharpen and will hold edges better.

Does anyone know which NuPastel numbers were used?

I tried to find the pastel demonstration that you are referring to, but couldn't. I am very familiar with nu-pastels and might be able to help, but can't find any pastel demonstration done by Mr. Whitacker. Try posting the link to the exact page.

Most of my current NuPastel drawing is done with three earth brown colors: 293, 283 and 253.

I work on slightly off white museum mounting board, usually 32" x 40" in the sheet.

I have ten digital photos of the materials and my working techniques I could send you if you wish. I would have to take the time and resize them all if I were to post them on this forum.

BTW - It still blows my mind that I can ask questions of people like Mr. Whitaker, Virgil Elliot, and other heavy-weights and actually get a response. This is probably analogous to calling up B.B. King to discuss string gauges and vibrato technique. Just unbelievable. I cannot tell you how helpful these forums can be, especially for someone without access to a teacher. Thanks everyone!

It isn't much, and it will probably thoroughly confuse everybody.

Thank you for posting the question, and thank you Mr. Whitacker for answering it. This thread reminds me that one could probably get good results in many different colors, as long as one is using a few different hues of the same color.
