Portrait of Louis Francois Bertin
Hello, everyone. This is a portrait of Louis Francois Bertin, Ingres painting. Oil on 10" x 14" canvas. Do you have any comments?

Ingres Meets Modigliani
You have wisely chosen what many consider to be the greatest portrait ever painted. I have studied this masterpiece in print and at the Louvre without tiring. In fact, the museum guards where it hangs had to advise me they were closing on several occasions.
Was your goal to stylize the face or to copy? As a copy, the eyes are close and the nose is sharp. As a modern "Modigliani-ization" based on the orginal, I think this is super! |
Thank you
Jeanine, thank you for your comments. My goal is to make a beautiful portrait work, I don't allow mistake in my painting. And can you tell me what is Modigliani-ization?

Ingres Portrait of Bertin
Let me say, I think your work is beautiful! I have provided a link to the image of the orginal for comparison. Be sure to follow link for detail! As mentioned in earlier post, I believe the sharpness of the nose and closeness of the eyes in your rendering give a modern effect. (Modigliani was a famous modern artist who frequently centered features and streamlined noses without losing the likeness. I invented the word "Modigliani-ization" to make the comparison.) More specific explaination would require a side-by-side analysis, which I am unable to provide. I am asking Santa Claus for Photoshop this Christmas. I hope you will allow for "mistakes" in your art and in life. Sometimes that's where true beauty lies. |

Here is one image which typifies Modigliani's way of centering and streamlining features. I do not think you have done this so extremely with your Bertin painting, rather I use this to illustrate the difference I saw between your version and Master Ingres' orginal. Here is a Modigliani reference.
