If you're not familiary with scanning and how to get a good one, you may want to read over the topic on "Getting a good scan" at http://forum.portraitartist.com/show...&threadid=274.

Following are the things you need to know to include an image with your post using manage attachments:

1. You can attach up to 4 images per post.

2. The files you will attach come from your hard drive. The screenshoot at the end of this post shows the location of the "manage attachments" option on the posting page.

Click the "manage attachments" button and a small window will pop up. Click on "browse" to go out to your hard drive and find each file. Once you locate the file, double-click it and the path of the image will now appear in the attach file text box. It will look similar to this: c:\my documents\myportrait.jpg. You can do this up to 4 times.

Simply entering the name myportrait.jpg will not work. You must have the complete path on your hard drive.

Attaching a file will not work if it exceeds the size limits. A file cannot be greater than 600 pixels high, nor wider than 400 pixels and not larger than 100kb..

3. If you click "preview" the attached image will not appear, but if done correctly, will appear on your final post.

4. If you later want to change the attached files, simply click the "edit" button on the post and then click "manage attachments."

If you follow these directions exactly, you should be able to post images.

Below is a screen shot of the posting page showing the location of the manage attachments option on the posting page. It shows one image already attached.

After correcting my file names by eliminating spaces I continued to have mixed results when attempting to attach images to my posts. I recently found, however, that after browsing and selecting an image when using Explorer, only the image file name was appearing in the browse window and not the full path. Liepke.jpg would appear instead of: Macintosh HD: Documents:NewJimsStuff:Artist:Liepke.jpg, for example. I tried the same file from the Netscape browser, the proper path appeared, and the image posted. I should note that I am using a Mac G4 platform and have no idea if that has contributed to the problem.

Thanks for the tip Jim. Speaking of Netscape, I've noticed that the forum loads much slower in Netscape than in Explorer.

Not only must you eliminate spaces, but also capital letters. If you stick to simple lowercase filenames you will (should) be blessed with consistent results.

Will,

It may also help to know to what platform and browser your solution applies.

On another note, I find that attempts to download posted images while using Netscape aren't successful but will work in Explorer. This makes it all the more fun, since I have to use Netscape to post. Go figure. As noted above, I work on a Mac.

I apologize, Jim.

I was having the same trouble you described until I implemented the solution I suggested. I will revise my first reply to say it 'should' fix the uploading problem.

I assumed we were on only a gently rolling playing field. I can't address how a Mac handles this stuff, but I don't understand why it would be different, since your machine either uploads the image, or it does not. Then, the forum server either presents the image, or it does not. If you're finding that one browser displays it but another one doesn't, I would suggest the problem might be with the installation of that browser.

I run an IBM compatible box with Windoze 98 and IE 5.1. I've never had a problem posting images here since I simplified the filenames. I also run Opera, which functions properly as well. (Opera is a compact browser that is about twice as fast as IE and Netscape, but doesn't handle some complex web pages as reliably. Downloadable free from opera.com.)

If your machine were my machine, I would be suspicious that the software at some level has become corrupted, most likely the browser, maybe both your browsers. All it takes is one file, and even Bill Gates doesn't know which one it is.

Rhetorical question: how long has it been since you reformatted and reinstalled all your programs? I know some computer geeks who do this at least once a year. I did mine less than a month ago, and already it is exhibiting signs of mental instability.

Please note: this is not a diagnosis. It's merely an informed suspicion.

My turn to apologize. My problem is not downloading the image, but more so the inability to copy/paste, drag/drop, or otherwise save the image once it's on my screen. My reply was careless.

I reinstalled all programs two years ago and Netscape within the year and will hope that newer version (7) will solve the problem.

In the area of the mysterious, my files travel with or without caps.

Hi Cynthia

and thanks for welcoming me aboard.

On a few forums, you can choose to insert image in the corpus of the text, as the text is linked to it... then you can write again and insert a different image... very useful for a WIP
it ca also be added with a html code like this one underneath

http://www.the-dog-museum.com/images/Complices.jpg

Is there a way to do it, here ?
or all the images with "manage attachment" will be at the bottom of the page ?

Thanks for your answer

Cyrille

Cyrille,

All the images here are done with Manage Attachment and would be at the end of your text - up to 4 in one post. You'd have to start a new post to get an image to effectively break up text.

You cannot see it on the post above... before the link to one of the images of my website, I added a ( and Img and closed the )

instead of showing the link, it should show the image
