Finished this recently.

I wanted to keep the shimmery feel of the "enchanted forest." The play of light in the scene was interesting, and I would have been angry with myself if I hadn't taken it on. Believe it or not, I edited some things out, and the environment is more loosely painted than this small reproduction shows.

The family saw it this weekend and they're pleased.

Stunning portrait Tom!
I really like the composition on this one. The angle of the greenery covered wall she is sitting on creates a pleasant movement.
The subtlety of the tones are painted very nicely. I can see why it was so well received. Award winner!

Claudemir Bonfim 07-14-2009 03:20 PM

Beautiful and lovely.

Natalie Hunsaker 07-14-2009 04:39 PM

VERY well done. I do like the overall composition and the play of light. And I'm proud of you for "taking it on" instead of being mad at yourself for not :) Again, good job on a wonderful portrait!

Mara Schasteen 07-14-2009 05:29 PM

Gorgeous and so soft ... love it!

Terri Ficenec 07-14-2009 09:56 PM

Wow Tom -- Simply stunning! The shimmering quality of light is deftly done -- and those rust tones in the foliage to the right -- compositionally elegant. Wonderful work capturing how young she is too -- Congratulations!

Mike, Claudemir, Natalie, Mara, Terri--
Thanks, everyone, for the affirmation.

Interesting and FABULOUS. Tom, just came across this. WOW! It's beautiful, and certainly up to your usual high standards. The play of light on all the greenery is exceptional! Well done, Tom.

so beautiful. Just love the ledge she is sitting on. You rendered it beautifully, well, all of it for that matter. . .

Wow Tom!

There's a beautiful and subtle theme going on in this work. It's like a painting of an enchanted princess in an enchanted garden. Nothing is glaring or obtrusive, even the light. It makes me feel as if something (magical) is about to happen and she's sitting there waiting for it. Whether it is in her imagination or in reality, it doesn't matter.

Beautifully painted, too, as always!

Tom Edgerton 08-28-2009 11:32 AM

Alex--

It felt that way at the time, too. She was about four and a half or five. We delivered and hung it last weekend.

Thanks so much...I really value your comments!

Sweet and elegant, Tom! The white gown set upon the greenery is a rich and lovely setting of timeless appeal. Nice smile too.

Carlos Ygoa 09-10-2009 07:25 AM

Tom,
Up to your level of excellence as usual....the sort of piece the family would be proud to own.
Masterful work! Everything about it is exquisite.

Tom Edgerton 09-10-2009 09:04 AM

Carlos, thanks! Hope it's got at least a little of the feeling for character that your work always has.

Heidi Maiers 09-11-2009 12:37 AM

Tom, this is stunning!
Reminds me a lot of one of my all time favorite paintings on this forum - the one by Garth of the girls in the garden wearing their mother's shoes. This is classic and timeless - love it!

Tom Edgerton 09-11-2009 09:28 AM

Heidi--

Thanks so much...I agree with you, Garth's "Arianna and Taylor" pretty much closes the book on these types of paintings, at least for me.
