Carol Norton 07-16-2008 09:59 PM

Omg!

Words would only belittle your beautiful painting!

Alexandra Tyng 07-16-2008 10:57 PM

Wow, Chris! Can you post a closeup? Was it your idea to have her model for you, or was this a commissioned work?

Peter Dransfield 07-17-2008 08:09 AM

Good diagonals, languid pose, good strong lighting and I like her facial expression.

Christy Talbott 07-17-2008 11:13 AM

Really dramatic Chris, well done!

Marina Dieul 07-18-2008 09:06 AM

Thank you all. Yes, a commission. Here are details:)

Alexandra Tyng 07-18-2008 05:40 PM

Chris, it's wonderful! Thanks for posting the closeups.

The first impression is stunning, I think because of the yellow dress, the way her body leads your eye back in space toward the focal point--her head. And the focal point works incredibly well. There is a lot to look at: her luminous eyes, silky hair, earrings, and expression that invites you to take a closer look. Her hand is well modeled, too. I love how you handled the darkness of the interior.

Very beautiful Chris! Love the yellow, and interesting composition. What an inspiration you are - you make me want to paint!

Tom Edgerton 07-24-2008 12:43 PM

Terrific painting, Chris!

Margaret Ferguson 09-11-2008 01:43 AM

What a beauty, both the model and your interpretation of her
l wonder how many hours you would take to paint her?
Margaret

Chris Saper 09-11-2008 10:46 PM

Thanks, Margaret!

I think I spent about 40-50 hours of easel time.

Carlos Ygoa 09-13-2008 04:34 AM

Chris, I missed this when first you posted it....very fine work!
The pose and composition are both fresh and not very often seen in commissioned work, and I love the detail of the hand. Congratulations! (40 - 50 hours??!!!)

Richard Monro 09-13-2008 10:45 AM

Luscious! That was the first word that came to mind when i saw this painting.

The uplighting full on the face is a very different approach from most poses of this sort. Yet, it works so well.

Could you discuss why you chose this particular lighting arrangement?

Chris Saper 09-13-2008 07:50 PM

Thank you , gentlemen:)

Well, I don't really paint very fast, except in open studio. So 40-50 hours is probably pretty average for me for a painting of this size and complexity.

I was really thrilled with this lighting, and even more thrilled to have a client who was excited about something very atypical in a commissioned portrait. We experimented a lot with various lighting, indoor and outdoor natural light, traditional artificial lighting and finally this uplighting.

Wow Chris,

What strength in your sweeping composition! The light and color effects are powerful. Beautiful.

Garth
