Garth Herrick American Artist Interview
Dear Garth,
I was delighted to open my email today to find your taped interview with American Artist Magazine on line! I am so thrilled for you! This a wonderful opportunity for people to see you and your work, and to hear about your process. Here is the link : http://www.myamericanartist.com/2008...herrick-s.html From there, you'll be able to find an ongoing step-by-step. Congratulations, Garth:) |
Congratulations, Garth! The interview is great--just like you. You made some excellent points. I'm still waiting for my copy of AA to come in the mail, but from reading your copy quickly I think it's a great article. The reproductions are such good quality, too. :exclamati

It's so great to see you, Garth, you are a fine ambassador for what we are trying to do. :)
|
Wow, Garth! (I have yet to see my own copy - I can't wait to get it.). So good to hear that you are getting all this attention - I am so happy for you. :)
|
Congratulations, Garth! I got to see the advance copy at the conference, and it's a great article. Well deserved....

It's Wow for me too

I'm beginning to wonder, who is this guy in the video interview? Maybe I should ask if he knows me. He looks somehow familiar.
Kidding aside, it's very strange to watch oneself for the first time in a video. At first viewing I actually covered my eyes whenever I spoke something. Half a day later I watched it again, and on balance it seems okay as a portrayal and in intent. Thank you Chris, for alerting us and linking this, and thanks, Alex (who telephoned me), Alan, and Linda, all my good friends. Alan, I wonder if American Artist is available at news stands outside of the U.S.? I am still trying to get accustomed to this developing fledgling publicity. I think M. Stephen Doherty did a fine job with my interview, and focusing our conversation, for which I am grateful. I have just embedded this interview as a new addition on the video page on my web site (a work in progress); but by all means, pay American Artist a direct visit. I have turned the tables and added three images of Mr. Doherty interviewing me; the last is him on my computer! He did not wear a bow-tie as is usual, but in a strangely random happenstance we wore the same clothes except his shirt was green and mine was gray. All the best, Garth |
Oh that's right, the printed version too!

Many of the quotations attributed to me are enhanced and more articulate than I could ever mutter on my own. Some reproductions are a little dark and murky, but I must say I could not ask for a better write-up by Mr. Doherty. Garth |

I will see if I can get it in |
The video interview was wonderful Garth! I can't wait for subsequent additions.
I am wondering if there is a way to save the interview onto ones computer. My phone line connection is excruciatingly slow. It took me about four hours to download, a chore which will have to repeated every time I try to revisit it. It would be so helpful to be able to save it on my hard drive but I have never been able to do that with Flash downloads. Do any of you computer buffs have any suggestions? |
Fantastic, Garth! I also enjoyed looking at the print article at the PSA conference -- it had excellent reproductions, too.
Also, for those of you who didn't know, Garth won an award in the "best portfolio" competition, too -- well deserved! It was great to see you, Garth, and thanks again for the ride to Alex's place. |

Hi Mary, and Michele,
Mary, a lot of us have grown to take high speed connections for granted, and we lose sight we all were in your situation just a couple of years back with dial-up connections. I wish I had an answer for you about downloads but I have no clue how to download a flash video. I appreciate your persistence and your enthusiasm; it means a lot to me that you enjoyed the interview. I guess we have yo ask American Artist if there is a download option or hard copy offering. Michele, Thanks! Let's not lose sight that David Draime had the finest portfolio of them all. I am glad for his recognition and happy to be number two again. I personally strongly liked over twenty excellent portfolios out of all that were displayed for competition. By the way it was a treat to be your hired chauffeur; my old classic enjoyed your elegant company very much! Garth |
I just watched the interview, Garth, I LOVE the portrait you have in progress on your easel. Do you know when the next work-in-progress segment will be posted and how many steps there will be?
|
Great! Michele, this is being updated weekly, and we're in the second installment. I think maybe six steps are ready so far, with an unknown amount of weekly follow up installments. I better get busy! I am glad you like this triple portrait demo.
Garth |
Garth I am expecting the next bit as eagerly as an episode of House :)
Seeing your studio was also a treat Ilaria |
As I understand it, there will be just this one video interview but many parts to the photos-and-text step by step. Is that right? Is there a previous one somewhere archived on the American Artist site, or could you possibly post it?

Great recognition, and much deserved!
Wonderful to have seen you again up there... -T |
Great interview, Garth. I really enjoyed watching it. Your studio must be so nice to visit - there are so many interesting things in it (in addition to your excellent paintings and sculptures). Congratulations!
|
Garth,
It was so great seeing you in Philly last week. I enjoyed so much spending some extra time with you, and driving around seeing the sights in your classic wheels. The article you showed me looked great - reproductions looked fine - I can't wait to get a copy and read it. The online video is great - I just wish it was longer. I also wished the camera would have panned around a bit more so that everyone could get a better look at your fantastic, beautiful studio. Having seen it, Thomasin is right - there are so many interesting things, objects d'art, in Garth's studio! And I must say, your words in a live interview are as eloquent and cogent as your writing. And congratulations on your 2nd place portfolio award! (YOU are number one in my eyes.) David |
Garth,
congratulations on this instructive video, the wonderful article, the fascinating online work in progress, the well deserved portfolio award... Heu... Do I forget something ? Oh! Congratulations on the very good timing of all this ! |
Dear Ilaria, Michele, Tom, Thomasin, David, and Marina,
Your words are too kind! Thank you. It means a lot that you like the interview, despite the fact I never rehearsed my lines. Steve Doherty just turned on his video camera and we were rolling! I may have been thinking within "hey, wait a minute", but as you can see, he was pretty easy on me. Many of the written quotes in the magazine article are beyond my actual communicative skills, and may convey I'm smarter in person than I really am. The video interview is more of a reality check and honest. If I ever were to do it again, I'd practice my lines! But I am glad it comes across as "eloquent". I do like his opening pan around my workspace. It's a good thing I had just painted the walls and floor! I am not sure my studio is any more interesting than anyone else's, but it is true I have so many things filling it up. I played a 100 year old recording to help keep David entertained. I am glad you all now have a glimpse of a relatively straightened up studio. Keeping up with the online progression of the big triple portrait is a challenge, as there are other commissions demanding attention with deadlines too. I will do my best between all. Marina, it's truly amazing to me that everything is happening with such synchronicity. Part of it is intentional, like launching a web site now (it would be embarrassing if I didn't get one started), but the rest of it seems just serendipitous from my vantage point. There's the magazine article, video interview, online demo, web site, and portfolio recognition all at once. Yikes! Thanks again, hopefully there is more to follow in the progress demo. Garth |
Had a great time viewing the video, Garth. Congratulations on the interview, the article, your honours at the conference, etc...never more well deserved! Had to be patient while the video was buffering, it took a while but it was worth the wait (I normally only have the patience to wait for buffering to happen for special videos only, i.e. old Sesame Street clips and the like).
Finally can put a voice to the face in your avatar! Also had a good time looking around your studio and I noticed a nice big Titian book and the Mancini book. Great taste! |
I second everyone's words, it was great to see the video.
Congrats. |
