Self-Portrait

Here's another painting.

Oil on canvas, 16" x 20".

Thanks for looking, and any opinions are welcome.

Thank you, Piety.

Piety, grate job! Such vibrancy. Along with this self portrait I also love the painting of your mother. You handle value an color superbly. At the moment I am doing a commissioned portrait, in charcoal, of a family from Korea. I hope to do a oil portrait of them as well.

I truly appreciate you posting your work. I wish I had a chance to see more. It is dificult to critique at this distance. If you would not mind some close-ups. Thank you.

Best wishes,
mischa

Hi Piety -

I really like this. Great color, wonderful drawing and painting skills, nice composition.

There is one thing that bothers me and that is her shoulder on our (the viewer's) left. It draws too much attention, in my opinion anyway. Maybe soften that edge more?

Judson Eneas 07-15-2006 08:22 PM

This is a great job. Was this painted from a photograph or from life?

Piety Choi 07-15-2006 08:37 PM

Close-up.

Thank you all.
I also think that left shoulder looks too bright. Original shoulder is little darker than this photo, but I should better soften.
It's from photograph. I don't know how to paint myself with this pose.

And here's close-up.

Beautiful, Piety! I love the pose. Great job!

Mischa Milosevic 07-16-2006 04:09 AM

Piety, thank you for the better view. Your self portrait looks real good. I would not make any change here rather than frame it and hang it on the wall. This should be a study only and a good one. What I would suggest for you to work on next is a self portrait while looking in the mirror. Working from photos can teach some things but working from life is where you will learn much much more and enjoy every minute. Do 10 self portraits with different lighting is better than a hundred portraits from a photo. Why? Because working from life will teach you more than a thousand photos.

I wish you the best.

Wow Piety! This is so strong. I would leave it as it is.

I've met Piety and I can definitiely say it looks like her.

But this portrait goes beyond being a mere likeness. The whole thing has great balance--I love the way you have placed yourself in the composition. The color, edges, modeling, and level of detail all show so much mastery. Don't touch it! It's wonderful as it is.

Piety -- I just loved how you've handled the skin! (agree that that shoulder is coming forward a bit though. . .) Beautiful work and composition!

Piety Choi 07-17-2006 08:43 PM

Thank you Kim, Mischa, Alex and Terri for your warm encouragements!

I know and agree with Mischa's mention about using a photo as a reference. There are many shortages to be painted from photos. But in many case, we need to use photos.

I liked this pose to be painted, but I couldn't do it from a mirror. I might need several mirrors to make the set to get the reflection of this pose.

Thank you very much for looking and your sincere comments!

I love the colors in your portrait, Piety - sort of warm and moody - and the pose and composition are very pleasing. The only 2 things I would do are: 1.) half way down the shirt sleeve to the bottom of the canvas blur the edges together more and more as you go down so that the eye isn't drawn out the bottom of your painting. 2.) Place your signature on the bottom left to give the painting better balance. Other than that, I wouldn't change a thing, it's lovely as it is.

Piety,

What a wonderful strong portrait! I second everything that Alexandra so nicely wrote. Don't be apologetic for using a photo as reference. You just proved that a skilled artist can render a beautiful portrait even from a photo reference. I don't see how this could have any more volume and great skin tones! ;)

Piety Choi 07-18-2006 10:05 PM

Hi, Enzie!

Thank you so much for your time and warm encouragement!

I've attended lecture of Odd Nerdrum, one of living masters, last year. We had critique time with him. I brought "An Artist and his puppet" that was posted here before. He knew it was painted from a photo, then he said, "Throw it away!". Only reason he said like that was it was from the photo. Of course, we should better study from life as possible as we can, but good works are made by trained skill, talent, inspiration and full of committed loving heart for art whether we are using photo or life.

I agree.

Mischa Milosevic 07-19-2006 06:28 AM

Piety, please do not misunderstand my comment in regard to using photos to paint from. Your self portrait is wonderfully done. The drawing and your eye for detail is good. Good color choice and and value and composition.

I totaly agree with you here that "good works are made by trained skill, talent, inspiration and full of committed loving heart for art whether we are using photo or life."

I too use photos for some paintings. When copying a old master painting or drawing or for some commissions all I have to work with is the photo reference.

The traditional classical training teaches one the rules and then as one earns the experience he/she learns how to bend these rules. For example look at the painting of Hunt, by the well painted by Sargent (its in the Vanderbilt art collection posted by Elizabeth). What do you notice when you look at this painting? A beautiful painting? excellent execution etc.? Now, look at the light source. Where is it coming from? Look at the wall behind Hunt beautiful value and color choice. Now, look at the rain coat again masterfully done. Now, look at the face. Here too mastery but where is the light coming from and where is the shadow located on his face. Do you see it? Do you see what I'm saying? The light sorce is from the front while in the other objects the light sorce is comming from his left our right. This is if I am not mistaking bending the rules a tad.

Best wishes,
mischa

Mischa, I am sorry if my expression showed I've misunderstood what you want to say. May be my expression in English is not enough to show full of my thought. I absoutely understood and agreed with you how much important that practice of painting from the life. I just tried to explain the reason why painters need to use photos sometimes.

I really thank you for your sincere comments.

Piety
