Hi, everyone

I wanted to see if I could complete a painting in a day and..... four days later I am done. This has nothing to do with a commission. I painted her for the sheer fun of those great cheeks and lips. I photographed her with my snazzy new Nikon D50 but am having trouble recording the violet tones that are prevelant in the piece.

Thank you for taking the time to look.

11x14, oil on Raymar panel.

Thank you, Mark.

Very nice Vianna! Can see how you'd want to paint those cheeks. :) I like the freshness of it and your use of color in the skin.

Alexandra Tyng 01-29-2006 09:06 PM

I really like this, Vianna. I keep staring at those cheeks, marveling at the way you have so many colors within a tightly controlled value range. You use such unusual color and/or lighting in all your paintings.

Vianna Szabo 01-29-2006 10:43 PM

Thank you, Terri and Alexandra.

I did use the Rose Gray and also the Violet Gray which was a wonderful complement to all the orange. I think I will need some more tubes of both.

Wonderful!

Great flesh tones. Great softness.

A real keeper.

Kimberly Dow 01-30-2006 10:22 AM

This is lovely - beautiful soft palette.

Thank you, Jeff and Kimberly

I really appreciate your taking the time to comment.

Just a note to you, Kim. I love your work. I am not great at responding to posts but I always enjoy the freshness and edge you place in your paintings.

Vianna,

How simply lovely. Those skin-tones are LUSCIOUS!

Lisa Ober 02-02-2006 11:18 AM

Oh Vianna, I am so sorry I missed this! I know it isn't news to your ears but I have to agree with everyone else that the skin tones are nearly innovative. I love them. What a gorgeous painting that I would love to see hanging in my house.

Wow, I've never been called innovative before! Thanks, Lisa and Mark, you made my day.

Vianna,

I just responded to one of your other posts on looking for resources and then came here to this one. Wow....looks to me like you don't have that fussing, fiddling problem at al!! What a great painting. Looks so spontaneous. Such great skin tones!

I would like to jump on the bandwagon and restate what a lovely painting this is. And yes, the colours are "luscious". Janet

Vianna, I really like this painting. This is a painting by a colorist! You really have worked on colour temperatures rather then tone, and this makes the painting radiate, almost producing light!

Wow. This tonalist is envious of how you did those lucious colors. Beautiful work!

Hi Vianna,
That's a lovely piece, great colors, skin tones and lighting.

Vianna Szabo 02-04-2006 10:57 AM

Thank you for the complements on the color of the piece. I do love to bounce color around on a painting. Interesting that I was drawn to paint Kayla because of the close value range on those terrific cheeks and neck. I liked how the form could be modeled by change of temperature and very small change of value. I ran a final check of the painting by photograping it in black and white because I was working to keep those subtle value changes in line.

I am often surprised when I study paintings I like how close the value ranges are, Often only one or two hard edges explain the form.

Thank you again for all of your kind comments.

Lovely work!

Can you tell me the name of the manufacturer of the Rose Gray and the Violet Gray paint you used?

Thank you, Michelle

The manufacturer of the paints is Holbein. These are not only terrific grayed colors but inexpensive as well. Dick Blick is selling them for $5.08 a 40ml tube. They have some other unique colors as well. Green Grey and Horizon Blue look like they have potential. I have a friend who uses Holbien almost exclusively and her pallet looks like a candy counter.

I learned about Rose Grey from this forum. I believe the topic is "Rose Grey"

Vianna, just today I spotted one of your paintings that made it into the show at Scottsdale Artists School. You have a wonderful and very individual color sense - it really is a standout and the soft freshness is lovely. This one here is a standout portrait as well - you have lots of fans, including me!

Vianna Szabo 02-08-2006 03:42 PM

Wow, Thank you Linda for your kind words. I'm glad you got to that show, I'm guessing there is some great work there. I usually enter only local shows but I have decided its better to get rejected from prestigous shows than small local ones.

I will be doing a larger painting of the girl that is in the Scottsdale show. She is a great subject and wonderful to paint. She has the prettiest skin color of anyone I have ever worked on.

Thank you again.
Vianna
