This must have quite the impact in real life. It would be powerful at any size... Gorgeous ambiguity in her expression, too. Janet

Kim, this is fabulous! Whatever powerful forces have been stirring in your work, when you apply them to portraiture--LOOK OUT, HERE SHE COMES! I love how everything works together visually: the subtle pattern of the wall next to the dress and necklace, The "pointed" statement of her hair next to the incredible sensitivity of her face and expression. Each thing in the painting simultaneously contrasts and harmonizes in different ways (color, texture, value, emotional impact) and on different levels. I'd love to see this in person.

Kim - this is so strong, even small on the computer screen! I love the color harmony-- the way the teals of her eyes, shirt and jewelry work with the reds and oranges of her hair and skin. Such a true adolescent expression, defiant and vulnerable at the same time.
Can only imagine the impact it must have in person. (Care to post a shot with someone standing next to it for a sense of scale? :D ) |
Dear Kim,
ThisisHUGE! Garth |
Mark - thank you, and nice to meet you!
Janet, thank you. Alex, I love it when you respond...I think you should send me an inspirational email every day for my ego. ;) Terri - great idea actually since I cant get a decent shot of this...if I back up with one of the kids standing there, I bet I can get a better one. Thank you! Garth, are you calling her or me a fat head? ;) Thank you - and Happy Birthday old man! :D |

Great value control and light!

This is so powerful, Kim, and I love what Terri has said about it: she looks defiant and vulnerable at the same time. It looks like you really had room to work on the skin surface and mold those forms with beautiful color. Congratulations - it's a prize winner, enter it everyplace you can think of!

Thanks Tom & Linda!
Here is a snap with my 14-year-old that gives an indication of size. Despite my best efforts - this may be the best photo of the painting as well. |
Ooooo........I like it.
Question for you, did you find it easier, or more difficult, to paint her face this size? I've never tried anything this large, but I do have a few paintings that the face is larger than life and I found it easier than smaller than life. I'm just curious if I am an odd ball. (Be nice) |

Thank you Janel.
I guess I found it easier in some ways. Perhaps more difficult only to get the changes in skin colors to be as subtle as I wanted at this size. I liked working this large. Im posting an updated image. As usual, I am never quite done... |
I love everything about this portrait. Nice lips, beautiful job on the hair, and you certainly captured a wonderful expression in her eyes.
|
Kim,
This is great. You look at the painting and then the girl's eyes never let you go. Powerful! Thanks for posting the oversize portrait. It just convinced me to do a painting I was thinking about |
Mark & Richard - thank you, I appreciate it. :)
Richard, I hope you'll share yours when its finished! |
I guess this would be little to you, wouldnt it Sharon? Apparently size does matter. ;)
