Congratulations Jimmie!

He did it again, and won the "Daler-Rowney" Award for his painting 'DanaF' at the 12th annual "Renaissance In Pastel" competition - held by the Connecticut Pastel Society.

And it was judged by Burton Silverman, no less.

Here is a photo of his painting from the show.

Way to go Jimmie, it is well deserved - and I am sure there are going to be many more!

Congratulations Jimmie! That is a remarkable pastel. There is a believable sensuality to the tonal development of her skin. Superb!

Jimmie,

Congratulations! Very well deserved. Of course, Burton knows great talent when he sees it. I can't wait to see what you do next.

Thanks so much guys, especially Kim for posting it. I still get embarrassed posting positive events for myself, so it's always good to have someone do it for me. :o

I'm going back up to see Sam Goodsell's portrait demonstration on Nov. 6th, it should be an eye-opener. Looking foward to the day where I know what I'm doing to give a demo of my own. If I had to give one today, the demo would take several hours which would include standing around, pacing, eating snacks, cursing, and crying, hahaha.

Jimmie if you could just show me the way to sharpen a pastel pencil without breaking the tip off when it's just where I want it, I will be eternally grateful!
;)

Congratulations, Jimmie! You certainly deserve it!

Sharon Knettell 10-25-2005 10:52 AM

Very cool, Jimmie!

Ha, ha folks, I saw the original and this photo DOES NOT do it justice. It must have popped off the wall and grabbed the judge by the eyeballs!

Congratulations JIMMIE!

Jimmie Arroyo 10-25-2005 01:20 PM

Wow, thank you guys so much, I'm blushing!

Oh Beth, that's VERY easy, the trick is that you stop using your pencils and use Nupastels or Polychromos sharpened with a blade instead. Just messing with you, I have a Boston brand pencil sharpener that has a few different openings, you pick one slightly bigger (that depends on the brand you use of course) and kinda let the pencil "float" in there. if you shove it, it'll break for sure, but if you put it in there softly with some play, and SPIN the pencil, it usually comes to a decent point without weak wood. Sorry if that sounded perverted. Hope it works.

Thanks again guys!!!

I am so very happy for you!

Jimmie,
What a year you have had. and we all have known it was only a matter of time, that your unique and beautiful work would be recognized and rewarded. I am honored and delighted to have watched your progression since I joined the forum.

You are talented but so very dedicated, that you have been such an inspiration to me. I wish I had 10% of your stamina.

This is just so well deserved, Jimmie. Congratulations. Oh yeah, throw in a hair demo too ;)

Sharon, I am so jealous you saw this piece in person!

Chris Saper 10-26-2005 02:37 PM

Congratulations!

Kimberly Dow 10-27-2005 12:56 AM

I got to see this one in person as well in NYC at a show there. With the attitude on this painting, I suspect it reached out and grabbed the judge, like Sharon said - but maybe not just in the eyeballs. ;)

Cynthia Daniel 10-27-2005 04:41 PM

Congratulations, Jimmie!

Tom Edgerton 10-28-2005 08:58 AM

Jimmie--

It's outstanding!

I appreciate the guts you showed in the original conception, too. It's a reminder to me that if the idea isn't there to begin with, all the technique in the world--which you have in spades--won't matter.

Very cool...Congratulations!

Thanks for all the new comments, they are VERY appreciated!!! :)

Rob Sullivan 10-28-2005 09:13 PM

Jimmie-

Sorry I came into this late. I thought (glancing at it) that it was an old thread with some new commentary re-activating it. I'm glad to see I was wrong, and that you are yet again gaining much-deserved notoriety with your fine work. Sweetness, bro.

Oh, and that "demo" you're thinking of (page 1 of this thread) --- It looks as if you already have a good method going there! I could see you teaching in a workshop: "More crying! You can't get good chroma without crying! And you over there - start pacing and eat more snacks! Say it with me now: @#$%!!" Man, that would so totally work. :D

Allan Rahbek 10-29-2005 06:06 AM

Julie Deane 10-29-2005 06:21 AM
