As they say the 8th time is a charm.
After months of working on this posthumous portrait of Margaret Unnewehr Schott, I am finally happy with the circa 1956 image of this lady who achieved so much in her life time, be it great or controversial. I was happy when the Academy Principal proclaimed that the large hall named after her will now have a soul to accompany the name. This is oil on linen, 30 x 40". I hope these digital images appear OK on your monitor. |
Hi Beth,
Another great work! could you post some close-ups of the hands and dogs? Congrats again. |
Hi Beth,
I 've been watching you work on this elsewhere, the finished painting is seamless, beautifully done. Congratulations! Carolyn. |
WOW! This is beautiful. And what a resemblance!
Congrats on an amazing portrait that obviously is very special to you. |
Beautiful job Beth, one of your very best. I love the period flavor of the piece as well as the design.

Thank you all very much.
Sharon I was thinking of you yesterday at a presentation with Judith Carducci. She was using Great American pastels and for some reason I remembered you mentioning them and I had never seen them before. Then she said they were made in my hometown - I about died! Sorry for the digression. If you had noticed an earlier composition, I really appreciate you even noticing it, since it was difficult. I only had a head and shoulder small class picture of her so everything else was worked through. I thought it was important to have her Saint Bernard's and little baseball. But I need to give a feeling of an estate and a hint of the school colors, thus it became a nightmare to bring together, I hope I have served it well. Thanks again, Beth Bonfim I am afraid the hands might have a bit of glare, but here are the close ups: |
Beth,
Congratulations on a fine portrait! I admire your determination to do justice to this lady even with such distinct reference challenges. Your patience has really paid off. Way to go! |
In Living Color!
Dear Beth,
Congratulations! What a nice bold design and fearless use of color. I'm sure your subject would approve! Her lovely portrait is evocative of the period. My earliest recollections and perceptions were that people in 1956 lived in a black and white world, and your compelling portrait certainly dispells that notion! (I date back to '58). Garth |
Beth,
All the hard work really paid off. Beautifully done! |
Beth,
The portrait is absolutely FINISHED! Yeah!!!!!!! It looks maaarvelous darling.......... Do not touch it again |
Beth,
Congratulations! It looks superb! All the hard work really paid off! |
Beth--
She turned out beautifully! Congratulations!! |
NICE finish Beth, it came out even better than I thought it would. I remember you posting the references and how you had put them together, and remember thinking "holy #*^!" But your patience paid off and paid off great, congrats!!!

Second try......
Darn it. I wrote this big old kiss-your-big-ole'-butt post (you know I loves ya, Beth!) and it went pfffffft! and disappeared.
I am now - last couple months or so- back to painting, and painting up a storm. (Totally lost my creative bent when I had my lumpectomy- thought it might never come back), but it has. First things first: Beth, girlfriend, I am so proud of you. You're doing great, but I always knew you had it in you. This is a wonderful portrait, dogs and all!! Way to go! Speaking of which, I have had pet commissions keeping me busy (attaching the detail of the most recent- "Jake") and did a portrait commission of a little girl, Nicole (attached- I hope). Other than that, I'm painting figurative and all kinds of stuff! I'll try to post a couple. So happy to see your progress, Beth. But I miss hearing from you! Hugs, Linda |
Sorry!
I've gotten the word - twice!- about not attaching pics that are not topic related, and I know, NO PETS!
Anyhow, Beth.....way to go! :) |
Linda, as I mentioned to you, we try to keep the threads focused on the specific unveiling. You are most welcome to post your work individually, and as you know we no longer post animal portraits.
See you online. |
Beth, she looks wonderful - you have done such a marvelous job with this painting. She looks definitely from another time period and yet you have successfully made her come alive for us, especially in your flesh tones and paint handling. I also love how you've arranged the doorway and the dogs.
Gosh, this looks good. Congratulations! |
Great job, Beth!
This is really impressive. I, too, like the way you've made her look as though she is of her own time period, but with a contemporary feeling. There's a real tension between past and present. It must have been complex to bring together all your references, but you certainly did it well. Am I the only one who doesn't know the background information of this portrait? Obviously she is a relative, but beyond that I don't know. Can you fill me in or is there a thread on this forum that tells more?

Thank you again.
And Linda F. SO wonderful to see you! I am glad you have those brushes out, they looked great, I hope you post the little girl else where. Plus, I am glad you were not in Mexico this week! Maria mentioned that my images on my site might be better so I thought I would post the link directly to those. Marge Schott Alex, Marge is not a relative. I wasn't sure if you wanted to read about her, but this link is very comprehensive. Marge Schott Special News Section |
Beth, thanks for the link about Marge. Now I'm all up-to-date!
|
Great job Beth. I see your style developing with each new painting. I love the eyes and the new composition.
Hope all is well with you. Congratulations! Alicia |
Congrats
Congratulations on another successful portrait!
As Alicia said, your style is developing. I think I could pick one of your painings out of a line-up. Keep 'em coming! |
