Some of you have already seen this over in the WIP section, but I finally delivered this to the clients today. . . so now it's officially done.

"Best Friends"
Oil on New Traditions Linen Dibond panel (I love these panels!) 30"x24".

Kimberly Dow 10-11-2005 01:06 AM

Terri,

This came out wonderfully. I love the arm around the dog, it's priceless. I know that dog wanted to take over the painting. I have no idea what you did to keep him in his place, but it worked! I love seeing that close-up of the boys hand, it's painted so skillfully.

Carlos Ygoa 10-11-2005 05:32 AM

Just finished thanking you for your kind words to my post, then I see THIS...I am speechless. I missed this in the WIP section...I must see how this developed. My most heartfelt congratulations.
That surface you worked on (don

This is just incredible, Terri! I loved seeing the WIP and the finished result in simply awesome.

Cindy Procious 10-11-2005 08:28 AM

Great composition, beautiful flesh tones (dare I say... "Bougereau-like"?) - and, YESSSS... you DID it! The dog doesn't steal the show.

Do tell - what did you do, anyway, to divert the C.O.I. from the white-chested dog to the boy?

Terri Ficenec 10-11-2005 10:09 AM

Thanks Kim, :D, I was really pleased with how the hands turned out too. I didn't have to fuss with them too much, other than adjusting some tangents so they read without confusion. . .

Carlos, Thanks! As far as how it developed there are still progression images posted on the 'On the Easel' pages of my website. I made a few compositional changes prior to starting the thread in WIP here. . . The New Traditions panels are available online -- I don't know if they ship overseas, but I'd guess that might get prohibitively expensive. . . The large sizes especially are pricey to begin with, but I like the texture of their L600, the lead priming, the light-weight, rigid backing that doesn't need to be cradled. The one drawback that I've found is figuring out how to store works in progress, when working on multiple pieces at once. With stretched canvas, you can just hang them on the wall but these are flat. . . ?

Thanks Lacey! :)

Cindy, gosh thanks! I'm so glad you think the center of interest is where it should be now -- that was driving me crazy!! Mostly pushed back the contrast in the stones behind him (thank-you Allan :) ), and added finishing detail to his face. Moved one of the 'seams' in the rocks so that it pointed towards him, rather than the dog, and slightly shifted other seams a bit that way too. . .

Linda Brandon 10-11-2005 11:11 AM

Oh Terri! What a knockout of a painting! I was wondering what you've been up to lately, and now we know. I love how you are so sensitive to every texture change. This is a real prize winner!

Rob Sullivan 10-11-2005 11:55 AM

Now you and Garth H. can compare Welsh Corgis!

Terri, this is stunning. Your paint has such a lush feel to it; all the forms are soft, turning and rounded. It gives your work a "comfortable" feeling. Does this make sense? Regardless --- heartfelt congratulations on a great portrait!

[An aside: New Traditions is apparently moving warehouses. I know this because I got caught in mid-order. It's been over a month and still no panels. AND I'm teaching a plein air class!!! Luck of the Irish, I guess. Anyway - a caveat to those who want to order right now.]

David Draime 10-11-2005 12:07 PM

Terri.

Fantastic! Kimberly is right - that boy's hand is masterfully painted. Well, of course, everything is...but that hand just sings.

Terri Ficenec 10-11-2005 01:46 PM

Linda, Rob, David -- thanks so much!

(And Rob, thanks for the heads up on the warehouse move at NT!)

Carol Norton 10-11-2005 04:40 PM

Prize Worthy

Terri, you already have read so many compliments, but I must add mine to them anyway. Yes, a REAL prizewinner! Every part of the portrait is beautifully done. A STAR!

Terri Ficenec 10-11-2005 06:59 PM

Thanks Carol -- so nice of you to say so!

Lisa Ober 10-11-2005 08:51 PM

I enjoyed the WIP on this so much. Thank you for doing that. I find this painting to be one of the best I have seen you do. As I said before, it is quite endearing. You somehow came out with the perfect finish. Excellent.

Michele Rushworth 10-11-2005 09:53 PM

Really fabulous!

Terri Ficenec 10-11-2005 11:13 PM

Michele, Lisa-- thank you both! :)

Mary Sparrow 10-12-2005 06:37 AM

Wow Terri, this is amazing! Congratulations.

Patricia Joyce 10-12-2005 08:56 AM

Terri,
Wow! Stunning!!! I don't know how you do it!!!!!

Terri Ficenec 10-12-2005 09:30 PM

Mary, Pat. . . thanks so much! I really appreciate your feedback :)

Alexandra Tyng 10-13-2005 02:25 PM

Terri, this turned out so beautifully. I know how hard you worked on all the different aspects, and I enjoyed following the progress in WIP. Now that I see it finished, I'm thinking that the corgi's expression only serves to emphasize the boy's laid-back sweetness, since by some magic you made the dog not the center of attention. Very successful!

Alex

Terri Ficenec 10-13-2005 06:46 PM

Alex, thanks so much! The interaction between the two -in real life- especially endearing!-so nice to hear you picked up on that! :)

Enzie Shahmiri 10-13-2005 09:11 PM

Terri, this came out absolutely beautiful. Congratulations!

Richard Huante 10-14-2005 03:16 AM

Wow, Terri, what a wonderful portrait. Such incredible realism. And I admire & appreciate portraitists like yourself that can paint hands well.

Sincerely,

Garth Parker 10-14-2005 10:18 AM

Terri,
Your work is always so breathtaking. Another masterpiece  .

Garth Herrick 10-14-2005 11:29 AM

Dear Terri,

This is a truly breathtaking and stunning achievement; and for the record, your Corgi is better than mine! Like Alex has expressed so well, the dog really does define and frame the sweetness of the boy. Your portrait is doubly rich with the interaction of the two personas.

Garth

Terri Ficenec 10-14-2005 07:29 PM

Enzie - Thank you!

Thanks Richard... The hands on this one were one of those things, they sort of happened. (and then I was just smart enough to leave them alone. :D )

Thank you Garth/Jerome!

Mr. Herrick ;). . . First, thanks so much!!! About those Corgi's -- but your Corgi is just perfect! And perfectly suited to the painting. I can't imagine my husky Corgi (Eddy) complimenting your Jane so well as Iona. Howsabout we just say that each Corgi seems suited to it's master?

Thanks again everyone!

John Reidy 10-18-2005 09:43 PM

Terri

I just now discovered your painting WOW !

What a great job. I'm looking forward to seeing an award for this.

Congratulations.

Terri Ficenec 10-18-2005 10:10 PM

Thanks John! :)

Alicia Kornick 10-30-2005 04:19 PM

Terri,

This is just terrific! I'm partial to Corgi's, as I have one myself. The flesh tones are beautiful and the pup looks perfect. Just a beautiful portrait.

Alicia

Terri Ficenec 10-30-2005 11:07 PM

Thanks Alicia! :sunnysmil
I've got to agree with you that Corgi's are darn cute. . . we've got a boxer girl, but after seeing this little guy my son's been saying he wants a Corgi when he grows up.

Mark Lovett 10-31-2005 09:29 PM

Great work Terri!

Terri Ficenec 11-01-2005 03:31 AM

Thanks Mark! :sunnysmil
