2005 Portrait Society of America

Moderator note: I will begin consolidating the relelvant threads here. Please let me know if I miss one! Chris Saper

I just came back from the portrait conferrence in Reston, Virginia. I learned a lot of interesting things from watching Peggy Baumgartner's 3-hour portrait demonstration.

Janel Maples 05-14-2005 11:23 PM

I am still here.

This has been a fantastic experience. What a treat, not only to go home with more information than I came with, but to be around so many people who share the same passion for portraiture that I do.

I got to meet some of the people that I have felt so close to because of this forum. That in and of itself was worth the trip.

This is my first time attending the PSOA event and it will take a great deal from now on to keep me away.

Elizabeth Schott 05-15-2005 12:54 AM

Hey guys - any news on how our forum finalist members did?

Mary Reilly 05-15-2005 11:00 PM

I just got back today. Great conference and fun meeting everyone!

Tony and Garth both got Honors Awards. The finalist portraits were all wonderful - very stiff competition.

The SOG dinner that Cynthia hosted on Friday evening was great and we were honored to have Simmie Knox and his wife join us. He shared about his commission for Pres. Clinton and Hillary.

Next year's conference will be the first weekend in May in Dallas Texas. Hope to see everyone there!

Mary

Every year they say the conference is sold out so be sure to sign up early for next year. My suggestion is that if you think you might attend, send in your deposit and make hotel reservations as soon as the notices go out. You can always cancell by Feb if you change your mind, and hotel rooms can also be cancelled when it is closer with no penalty incurred. That will ensure your attendance even if it is a sold out conference.

:)

Dear Judson,

How come I never spotted you among the hundreds of attendees milling about? Wasn't this event great! Did you see any Forum folks? They were everywhere! Too many to list.

Anyway, I had a great time too. Sorry we did not meet.

Here are some pics:

I'm so sorry to have missed out on meeting many of the Forum members at the convention. It really was a wonderul and exhausting few days! I'm just sitting here trying to decide which of my photos to post, many of which are mysteriously blurry or else will get me into trouble with somebody or other.

Allan Rahbek 05-17-2005 04:23 PM

Dear Linda,
please post them anyway, It

Rob Sullivan 05-18-2005 10:00 AM

Big-time congratulations to Garth and Tony! Honors award, indeed! You guys certainly deserve such credit and recognition for the excellent work you do.

Geez, Garth - that photo of you makes me dizzy. They had a rollercoaster ride at the conference? Well, I'll plunk down the $ next time if they have the Lightning Loops on hand! :D

Well, here's a blurry photo of the Finalists. I will remove this photo as soon as somebody else posts a better one, so if you have one, please post it. I also need help identifying the people here, so please email me privately if you can help me out and I can make a list.

The two tall gentlemen on the right in the back are Garth Herrick and Tony Pro. Congratulations again!

Here's a photo of the combined Merit Award and Certificate of Recognition winners (not everybody was there at the conference). Again, I don't have all the names, so please email me and I will post them here.

Marvin Mattelson is third from the left standing in the back row next to Chris Saper and Sergio Ostroverhy is standing second from the right. I'm seated, the third one from the left.

Garth,

How TERRIFIC for you. I could not be happier. It was a beautiful painting. The others must have been wowsers to beat it.

Although I would have preferred a more Rocky like picture of you holding the award aloft, say in red silk boxing trunks and high tops.

Just a thought.

Tom Edgerton 05-18-2005 04:49 PM

Special congrats to OUR winners! It was GREAT meeting all you Forum folks that I hadn't before. And those I missed, well, you'll just have to go to Dallas too.

I'm goin'!

Love to all artists everywhere--TE

Michele Rushworth 05-18-2005 08:50 PM

It was great to meet everyone and see those folks whom I had met before. Congrats to all the award winners!

As always, after these events, I am reminded how much I still need to learn and improve -- the bar just keeps getting higher, I think.

That photo of Tony with the cigar would make a very interesting painting.

The Sopranos!

Pamela Weisberg 05-20-2005 11:35 AM

This was my first time attending the conference and I had a great time! I met alot of nice people, learned alot and am looking forward to attending next year.

Chris Saper 05-21-2005 02:36 PM

Ladies and Gentleen,

I just wanted you all to know that I am in the processof consolidating the many threads dealing with this year's PSA event in Reston. It made sense to me to consolidate those threads that were actually posted after the event. Please let me know what I may have missed.

Garth, would you like me to move the post-event threads from the "Jane & Iona" thread?

John Reidy 05-23-2005 08:05 AM

It took me a while to find this thread but now that I have I'd be remiss if I didn't acknowledge all of the wonderful and talented people that I met. This was my first POSA conference and it won't be the last.

My only regrets are, 1) I didn't have enough time to meet everyone, and, 2) I didn't bring my camera.

The level of paintings was magnificent and the competition was indeed tough. Congratulations to all of the participants.

I hope that next year I can get to spend more time to get to know more of you.

Allan Rahbek 05-23-2005 01:26 PM

When will the PSA site be updated? I would so like to see what "our boys" was up against !

Allan

I should have the updates up sometime within the next week. Just waiting for the winner specifics from them.

Sergio Ostroverhy 05-27-2005 03:27 AM

O My Goodness,

I could hardly recognize myself...
Thanks Garth! As my Master said:
Even a negative publicity is still a publicity!

:)

Very, very late

So sorry I didn't notice this topic before! It's taking me a while to navigate my way around the forum. I just wanted to add my congratulations to all the award and certificate winners. The finalists' work was wonderful, and half the enjoyment was seeing it in person. I'm so glad that next year the PSA will be having a show of all the winning work, not just the finalists. I really enjoyed the conference and I wish I had met more of you there.
