Allan,

What a great painting, in compostion and color! You are really coming in to your own with an original point of view.

I really like the fact that you have done a sensitive, yet unsentimental picture of this young man. So refreshing!

Richard Monro 05-09-2005 06:28 PM

Allan,
What a very beautiful handling of this subject. Great composition and mood. I am envious of your painterly style. Keep up the great work.

I love this painting, Allan! What a powerful, emotional piece, and despite all the strong warm color you have such beautiful controlled brushwork. Please enter this one in some contests, please!

Garth Herrick 05-09-2005 10:09 PM

Red done right!

Allan,

I agree with Sharon and all your above deserved accolades for this wonderful poetry on a theme of red. Your color sense is developed into a language of emotion and innocent play and spontaneity which perfectly represents your grandson's personality and vitality.

And you did this masterpiece in one day!! I am really scared (and jealous) of you. Bravo!

Linda is right too. Please see how far this painting will advance you in competitions. You may be surprised. Go for it!

Allan, I wish I had more eloquent ways of saying, "totally gorgeous" but I am too busy picking up my jaw. I love everything about this painting from the color to the background texture to the facial expression. I would agree with the suggestion to enter contests with it.

Ilaria Rosselli Del Turco 05-10-2005 04:36 AM

Allan, this is fantastic work, really.
As Linda said it is very emotional and there is a real engagement and relationship between painter and sitter.
Also such a good management of reds
Many compliments
Ilaria

Garth,
you are right, the theme was the reds. I did the wall in earth colors and the blouse in cadmiums and kept them close in value but different in structure and stole the pose from your avatar :santa:

Thanks, Allan.

Allan Rahbek 05-10-2005 06:07 AM

I think that I will enter a competition and maybe be as lucky as you vere,Kim

Allan,

Man, great job. I have been dying to do a red piece, and you did a beautiful job of it. Great expression also, it just works on every level.

Patricia Joyce 05-10-2005 10:49 AM

I'm speechless . . . This painting draws the viewer in, compelling, emotional, precocious

And the execution . . . W O W ! ! !

Carolyn Bannister 05-10-2005 11:03 AM

Thanks Mike,

It felt good to use up some of my old Cadmiums. I used the palette knife mostly for the wall behind, it would not have been possible to achieve the effect in other way. I find it is a good combination to use both knife and brush and fingers to manipulate the paint.

Thanks Michele,

I can see the time on my pictures. Here comes three while in progress.
The first one is taken Sunday 1.36 pm (in the middle of the day)
The second at 3.44pm
And the last one at 4.41am in the night / morning.

When I woke up Monday I oiled out, did a few retouches and posted.

Allan

Jean Kelly 05-11-2005 12:47 AM

Okay, I'm impressed. I use a palette knife for backgrounds also; I love slathering the paint on and moving it around.

Julie Deane 05-13-2005 02:19 PM

Allan, this is wonderful! I am really enjoying studying it.

Allan Rahbek 05-14-2005 08:03 PM

Allan

Cynthia Feustel 05-15-2005 11:22 PM

This is fantastic! Did you take any other photos to show the process of painting the face?

Cynthia

Allan Rahbek 05-16-2005 09:28 AM

Thank you Cynthia,

Sorry, I did not do any more step photos since it was getting late while I got to the head. I could have, but kept on painting a little more and more, until it was (almost) done.

Allan
