PSOA 2005 Judges?
 

I have a question, if anyone knows and can answer....

Who are the judges that determine if you are a "finalist" in the PSOA 2005 competiton? I know that the faculty artists do the final judging, but who does the first round picks?

I have often checked your post and note that nobody knows or took the time to respond. In many ways the selection of finalist is more critical than sorting out the ranking of the small handful that have survived. They also decide the special awards and recognition from all the entries. I understand the practicality of two step judging but often wonder how much gets rejected in step one that another set of judges would consider award worthy. Years ago I was rejected from a regional show and shortly after won "Best of Show" with the same painting. Obviously the latter judges were far more competent.

Judging seems to be as closely held as the the events of the Conclave.

I think sometimes there may be qualified volunteers who intially judge, but sometimes, it might be the assistant in the front office. There's no way to know what happens, which is why I think it doesn't make sense to get really upset about losing or really cocky about winning. I've had similar situations to what Jim has described.

Frankly I'm with Jim on this. When you win the judges are right. When you don't, well, what could they have been thinking?!

This question was answered for me about a half hour after I posted this question. I got a call from Christine Egnoski from the PSA and she was letting me know I was a top 10 finalist in the show, so I asked her who did the inital judging. She said it was the 3 board members of the PSA- Gordon Wetmore, Edward Jonas and
Tom Donahue.

Then the final judging is done by some of the faculty of the show... Burt Silverman, Ray Kinstler and I think Daniel Greene. Maybe Richard Schmid if he is available.

P..S. I was TOTALLY bowled over that I was selected as a Top 10 finalist. I never thought I would make it that far...

I am not one bit surprised, in fact, I had a feeling that you were one of the ten - congrats !(and thanks, Jim)

I wanted to clarify my earlier response. I think when you are in a portrait competition, especially the PSA, you would expect the judges to be well qualified.

Likewise, I would expect a group like PleinAir Painters of America to also have qulaified judges. The 'mystery' seems to be most prevalent when a group of diverse work is generally judged as a group - abstract, experimental, landscape portrait, etc.. Honestly I can't image how something like the Artists' Magazine competition contends with 10,000 entries.

This is all new to me too. I know how you feel because I feel the same. While I am not particularly surprised about you being selected as a finalist, I however, am surprised about being a competition finalist as well.

I think to clarify things, thirteen top finalists were chosen, rather than just ten, and while it does not sound as good, I believe we should say we are in the Top 13, instead of Top 10. Never-the-less, it is amazing to be a Top Finalist, no matter what the number of artists selected for this catagory.

I am looking forward to meeting you, and seeing your winning painting.

Among the 2005 PSOA finalists active on this Forum, I am only aware of Tony and myself. I would like to acknowledge Linda Brandon, and David Kassan, who are each getting Merit awards (out of a total of five Merit recipients). Chris Saper, Sergio Ostroverhy, and Marvin Mattelson have been awarded Certificates of Recognition (out of about fifteen in this category). All in all, this is a commendable showing of active Portrait Artist Forum members on the 2005 PSOA winners lists. We are each included in the Top 32, or so. If I have missed anyone, please let us know and chime in!

About the judging procedure, David Kassan ( a top 10, actually a top 5 finalist last year) had coffee with me last night in Philly. He described the same process that you heard Christine Egnoski relate to you. That pretty much verifies the procedure in place. It was good to see David again!

I was pretty much trying to just figure out who the judges where in the first round.

That painting of yours is great. I look forward to seeing it in person.

I did hear about there being 12 or 13 but Mr. Wetmore said they were from Europe and weren't sure if they were going to come out for it.

At any rate, I can't wait to see the 13 up close... I wish all the 32 paintings would be there. Shoot!!! Major talent pool in that show...
