This is an extreme close up of her face, the values did not vary from light to dark very dramatically so I tried to neutralize and work with the chroma. (teacher Marvin helped me through this - thank you.)

I am posting her left hand as a close up too, because it presented its own amount of problems.

By the way I postioned her fingers, they were just ackward enough to make it extremely hard to get it right. Also, it was difficult to keep her hand from, the best of Gestalt, growing out of her jeans. It was also my intention to downplay this hand to give it the least amount of emphasis.

Thanks for looking.

Beth,

This is the best so far! The color harmony is marvelous, and very satisfying.

Congratulations,

Mike McCarty 01-31-2004 01:44 PM

Beth,

Beautiful, great color and well composed.

Lynn T. McCallum 01-31-2004 05:57 PM

Thinking!

You were thinking about each brush stroke and where the next one was going to go and the one after that brush stroke. It really shows this time Beth! Good going! May your days always be filled with painting!

Michele Rushworth 01-31-2004 06:25 PM

I love it, Beth. Such lush brushwork too!

Leslie Ficcaglia 01-31-2004 06:25 PM

Beautiful portrait, Beth! Is this your daughter? The colors are so clear and true and the brushstrokes are impressive. I also especially like your treatment of all the various textures of cloth.

Richard Huante 01-31-2004 08:42 PM

Wonderful, Beth. Great drawing on this portrait. I agree with Chris; your best so far.

Sincerely,

Cynthia Daniel 01-31-2004 08:58 PM

Very nice, Beth!

Linda Brandon 01-31-2004 09:37 PM

This is my new favorite of yours, Beth! Wonderful pose, color, facial expression. You ought to be very proud of this.

Henry Wienhold 01-31-2004 11:50 PM

Beth what beautiful color. This is really nice work, great job.

Mary Sparrow 02-01-2004 07:59 AM

I agree with all the rest! Very nice work.

Elizabeth Schott 02-01-2004 11:01 PM

Thank you all so much for your kind words, encouragement means a ton to me!

Yes Leslie, this is my middle daughter. I always wondered why you saw so many drawings and paintings of artist children in all those wonderful art history books - now I know - cheap modeling fees. :)

Marvin Mattelson 02-02-2004 01:10 AM

Beth,

You make me proud.

Sharon Knettell 02-02-2004 10:08 AM

Beth,

I second the other kudos, but I really must comment on your use of color.

You have successfully orchestated a very unusual color scheme. It is so unexpected and brave.

Sincerely,

Jimmie Arroyo 02-02-2004 11:41 AM

Beth, your progress is incredible. Every painting is better than the last. You deserve it!

Carl Toboika 02-02-2004 07:34 PM

Way to go Beth ;) She's beautiful.

Valerie Gudorf 02-02-2004 11:17 PM

All I Can Say Is...

WOW! Elizabeth, this is stunning! Just...WOW!

Kimberly Dow 02-03-2004 02:56 AM

This is beautiful!

Isn't it too bad we can't charge our children for these considering they will own them later?

Patricia Joyce 02-03-2004 10:51 AM

Beth,

This is a beautiful painting! I love the colors and the face is very beautifully rendered. The whole mood is very pleasant, really invites one to rest on the painting!! I was wondering what you had been up to lately since I haven't noticed any paintings from you since school started. I see you have been very busy!!

I am so impressed with your progress. Keep showing us your works...

Elizabeth Schott 02-03-2004 12:23 PM

Thank you all very much again, it is especially gratifying to hear good things from those you admire most.

There is a thread called "Production" which I believe Tim started. I can't remember who posted about going through days of not wanting to paint, but I am so the opposite - it is all I want to do. I paint when I am sick, when there is a holiday, for my birthday my family gave me a Sunday of nothing but painting. I remember Sharon asking me if my family ever ate or had clean clothes. ;) I won't answer that.

Denise Hall 02-03-2004 11:24 PM

Yes, it's beautiful

Beth,

Your painting is almost as lovely as your pride and joy subject. She is a lucky girl to have you to paint her - as all your clients are as well.

Beautiful color scheme as Sharon mentioned - you pulled it off fantastically. She has a good eye, that Sharon!

The skin color is magnifique!

Denise

Elizabeth Schott 02-03-2004 11:54 PM

Thanks Denise! After reading some of the subjects, I feel I should mention not meaning to ruffle any feathers that this is totally cad free!

Patricia you asked where I had been. I think after all my studying last summer I dove in over my head at first with a bunch of things I had learned swirling through my mind, so I had to take some time and paint a ton to get it to work right for me. I picked up so much - Bill's dance, and eye opening exercises to really see form and Marvin's general everything. I love to paint with Marvin's palette and use more of a painterly style like Bill

Jeff Fuchs 02-04-2004 10:00 PM

Wow, Beth. She looks just like you. When I saw "15 again" I thought you had done a self portrait from an old photo.

Ver nice work.

Keep it up. Who needs clean laundry?

Check with your accountant. Maybe we can pay them. As a business expense :)

Wow Chris, this is a timely suggestion!

Ngaire Winwood 02-14-2004 01:45 AM

Put simply, I'm inspired, Beth. Everyone has commented that this is your best yet. I'm curious to know that the quality of emotions attached to the subject plays the most important role in a winner! This maybe is why artists before us did their best work not just because they were available.

Ngaire you really caught this, she was sick this fall and laid up for a long time. So I just can't paint her enough!
:)
