Winner of Portrait Society of Canada

Just so you all know, I recently won the Grand Prize and Best in Show award at the Portrait Society of Canada's annual conference and competition. I'm attaching the winning portrait.

All the best to everyone. I haven't been here for a while.

Dear Juan,

Many congratulations! A great, and well-deserved honor. Can you post your painting?

Glad to see you back,

Juan Martinez 06-10-2003 11:46 PM

Hmm, looks as if my attachment doesn't work. (It's a browser problem, not a user problem.)

I'll try again tomorrow (unless someone grabs the pic off of my website and uploads it for me).

Oh, and a lovely website, too!!

Your picture was 407 pixels wide; the maximum allowable on this Forum is 400 pixels wide. I made the fix in Photoshop.

Hi Juan,

This is terrific news and I'm so happy for you! Your work is wonderful.

I am also glad to hear from you again. I hope Canada has thawed out a bit from the last time you posted.

Best wishes,
Linda

Thank you everyone for your compliments! I appreciate them a lot.

Catherine, thanks for taking my not-at-all-thinly-disguised hint and uploading the picture for me. It didn't occur to me that it was too large. I've reduced the picture's size. If it shows up here along with this note, then that was it. (Sorry about the redundancy). Also, it would demonstrate that it is a user problem and not a browser problem as I suggested earlier and I would then owe my browser an apology. Thanks for the compliments on my website, too.

All best,
Juan

Ah!! That was it. Thanks for pointing it out. Even though it's clearly written right beside the file attachment area, I somehow missed it. 'Twas late.

Congratulations Juan! I love the painting.

Cynthia Daniel 06-11-2003 09:27 AM

Congratulations Juan! I love the painting.

I believe that SOG member artist Gwenneth Barth gave some type of talk. It would be great if someone would give a report on the event in the portrait society event section and even post some photos.

Mike McCarty 06-11-2003 09:33 AM

Nice going Juan!

Wish you would stop by more often, our needs are great.

Juan Martinez 06-11-2003 10:01 AM

Thank you Cynthia and Mike. (I think I'll be around a bit more now, Mike)

That is a good idea about posting information on the conference, Cynthia, I'll see what I can do. Gwenneth gave a demonstration on pastel portrait painting. It was excellent. We also had superb demos from Yuqi Wang, Dan Thompson, and Beth Koestal.

I'll try to provide a more comprehensive report before long. In the meantime, this might be a good time to let everyone who is contemplating coming to Toronto know that IT IS SAFE HERE!! The SARS business hurt the portrait conference a great deal, but, darn it all; there are more than 6 million people here and only about 150 are probable SARS cases. What are the odds? (I'm not sure about my numbers; I just know that they're not too high at all.)

That being said, I would not recommend going to a hospital's paliative or respiratory wards while you're visiting. The SARS seems to be confined to people who have been in-and-around specific hospital situations where someone had SARS. Otherwise, the place is fine. :)

Hi, from a fellow Toronto native.

What a magnificent painting!

Elizabeth Schott 06-15-2003 09:59 PM

Juan, this is truly one of my favorites! It is just beautiful. I especially love the composition. Did you give us a background on the subject you painted.

Can you post a close up of the face and hand on our right?

Denise Hall 06-15-2003 11:06 PM

Il Professore

Beth,

Hi again!! I hope Juan won't mind me answering this - but just in case he doesn't drop in for awhile - this is John Angel, his teacher, the master teacher at The Michael John Angel Studios in Toronto, CA.

This portrait took my breath away when I first viewed it. It is so completely perfect, in my opinion.

See you soon,
Denise
