Myers-Briggs for Artists

Tell us your Myers-Briggs personality type! If you're not familiar with the test, here's some history and explanation: http://www.capt.org/The_MBTI_Instrum...el%20Myers.cfm

Here is an overview of the types: http://www.capt.org/The_MBTI_Instrument/Overview.cfm Thoughts?

Here's a site where you can take a free test:
http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes2.asp

By the way, the Keirsey test (which I believe is an offshoot of Myers-Briggs) rates me as an INFJ and Myers-Briggs as an INFP. But, my "intuition" tells me I'm more of an INFJ and that's what I marked in the poll. So, if you want to investigate more deeply, take the Keirsey also. It used to be free, but the last time I looked, it was $15. http://www.advisorteam.com/user/login.asp

I give Tim Tyler credit for bringing the subject up originally. I think he must be intuitive because I was just recently discussing this subject with a friend. :)

And, I give Renee Price credit for actually starting a Myers-Briggs thread earlier. But, I reposted so it could be a poll. Renee, come and vote!

Here's a short orientation on the meaning of the letters and their relative positions:

1. Introvert (I) or Extrovert (E)
2. Sensing (S) or Intuitive (N)
3. Feeling (F) or Thinking (T)
4. Judging (J) or Perceiving (P)

Timothy C. Tyler 07-24-2002 11:09 PM

50-50

Usually 50-50 on the N/S sometimes they call this an "X" I think.

Cynthia Daniel 07-25-2002 09:24 AM

Hmmm, though the poll was a good idea, I'm noticing that my Sagittarius curiousity as to who is what type isn't being fulfilled. So, I encourage all of you voting in the poll to also post what you are, unless you prefer to be private about it.

Mari DeRuntz 07-25-2002 10:12 AM

I'm not a professional, but art has, since earliest memories, been central in my life.

Anyways, I tested INFP even with slightly different answers to the same questions on the free test site you reference above (thank you!). This is "the healer." Although I haven't ever exactly thought of myself as a healer, it seems to be an accurate description in the followup articles.

Interesting thread.

Renee Price 07-25-2002 10:36 AM

I'm here, Cynthia! I am an ENTJ which is Extrovert, Intuitive, Thinking, Judging.

Renee Price

Cynthia Daniel 07-25-2002 10:50 AM

Ah-hah! We have our first "S" (sensing), instead of "N". Wonder who that might be. I was struck by the abundance of "N's." As of this writing 8 out of 9 are "intuitives."

Khaimraj Seepersad 07-25-2002 09:24 PM

Oh, this is really rich. I am an INTJ. Moderate on all scores - chuckle. Strange, I just finished telling someone on another group that I was a pragmatist.

Rochelle Brown 07-26-2002 02:47 PM

Well, if anyone's interested, I'm an INFJ. Is it possible that that may change if something in my life changes?

Timothy C. Tyler 07-26-2002 06:29 PM

Under protest

I'm a soft INTP. My wife says I'm an ISTP in denial, because I don't love fantasy to the extent she does, and ISTP's are the woodworkers, craftsmen and artists (according to one test.)

Jim Riley 07-26-2002 08:14 PM

Apparently I am ENFJ. But my friends call me Jim.

Mike McCarty 07-26-2002 08:34 PM

Khaimraj, we must be soul mates! I am INTJ. The numbers were: 22 - 33 - 11 - 56, I don't think I understand what the numbers mean, would that be obvious for an INTJ?

Susan Ballinger 07-26-2002 09:09 PM

I'm INFP 56-22-22-22. I'm not sure exactly what the numbers mean in relation to how it scored me, but that's what I came up with! I am interested to see if artists tend to be one type over another, or if we're as diverse as any random crowd. I think its that nagging mathematician inside me that looks for interesting statistics. That and I'm as curious as a cat. Interesting that I'm a Sagittarius too. ;)

Cynthia Daniel 07-26-2002 09:27 PM

Susan,

I'm just as curious too and also a Sagittarius.

Khaimraj Seepersad 07-26-2002 09:28 PM

Mike,

As long as you realize that Khaimraj is a man (chuckle) I am content to be soul friends, unless you're English, then just mates would be OK. :)

I haven't got the foggiest idea what these numbers mean either. Mine were 33-43-33-44. Just thought I would join in the fun. I had done another one of these online tests, that said I was 50/50 as left brain, right brain goes. Harmony.

However, I also did the Role Model Profiler and ended up with King Solomon, J. R. R. Tolkien, while Gandalf is an INTJ, if I remember correctly. I think I read too much L.O.R and Silmarillion when I was in my teens. Actually I still re-read the books.

Didn't the articles say that there were about 1% of us [INTJ's]? We must be up there with the Dodo birds or Carrier pigeons - chuckle.

Mike McCarty 07-26-2002 10:33 PM

Khaimraj,

In matters of this thread I am English. I like being in the company of Gandalf the Great. I wonder what Bilbo was? I also liked the name Fastoff Bolger, one of Bilbo's cousins, I think.

Margaret Port 07-27-2002 07:34 AM

I am INFP. I am also Sagittarian, so usually curious. Perhaps you could run a poll of artists' star signs. That could be interesting.

I am new to this posting and find myself strangely short on words.

Margaret

Juan Martinez 07-27-2002 08:28 AM

Hey, this is fun. I am an INTJ as well, but my numbers appear to be somewhat roller-coaster-ish. (11-56-11-33). Also, I am a Pisces. I wonder how the astrological signs will fit in with the Jungian types?

Thanks for (re)posting the thread, Cynthia.

Juan

Timothy C. Tyler 07-27-2002 09:05 AM

Artists are all the same

So much for artists being all alike huh?

Cynthia Daniel 07-27-2002 09:07 AM

Margaret,

Yes, sun sign would be interesting to poll also, though there's so much more to astrology than just the sun sign. It would also be interesting to see if there's a connection between sun sign and personality type.

Everyone,

Please comment on whether you'd like to see a poll on

(1) sun sign alone

(2) sun sign related to personality type

Renee Price 07-27-2002 09:28 AM

I choose sun sign related to personality type. I'm a Leo and as I mentioned before, ENTJ. Both are right on target!

Renee Price

Khaimraj Seepersad 07-27-2002 10:29 AM

Ha ha, Juan,

We are both INTJ's and Pisces. How amusing. Ah, but are you a sky tiger [Chinese Zodiac]?

Juan Martinez 07-27-2002 10:36 AM

Khaimraj,

I was born in a year of the Dog.

Woof.

Juan

Michael Fournier 07-27-2002 01:46 PM

Another INTP

Well, Tim, I might be with you (in denial). I answered based on how I thought I was, but my wife laughed at some of my responses

Michael Fournier 07-27-2002 02:08 PM

Personality

Not surprised by the fact that there is no clear personality to artists. You need look no further then the varied work of artists. Just look at the different styles on http://www.portraitartist.com/. And this is just comparing portrait artists. Imagine if you included all people who choose the title of Artist. There is no way a singular personality type could have produced such varied styles of self-expression.

I think it is non-artists that try to lump us all in one basket.

Mari DeRuntz 07-27-2002 11:46 PM

Well said, Michael...

ReNae Stueve 07-28-2002 07:43 AM

Cynthia,

This was brilliant fun. I'd taken the test twice over the past several years and flipped from ENFP to INFP. This last test came up with INFP. Also Sagittarius. I'd love to see more polls on Sun signs and personality. As stated above, we are all different, of course, but finding what we all share in common would be wonderful.

Cynthia Daniel 07-28-2002 09:05 AM

ReNae,

So far, you're only the second one who seems interested in sun sign/personality type. Since the polling system doesn't provide the feature of multiple levels, I'm wondering if it might be best to make 12 separate polls (each would have to be a separate post), one for each sun sign. Otherwise there would be 12 (sun signs) x 16 personality types within one poll, which would make for a very long list from which to select.

Well, we'll see if more interest develops since it would be quite a bit of work for me to set it up.

Susan Ballinger 07-28-2002 01:15 PM

Interesting

I guess I find it interesting that so far Cynthia, ReNae and myself are all Sagittarians, tested at least once as INFP, and are curious enough that we would like to see the relationship. My birthday is 12-21, so if I had been born a day later, I would have been a Capricorn. So just for fun, I read the horoscope for that too. :)

Susan

Doreen Lepore 07-29-2002 09:13 AM

That was fun, I'm an ISFP, 89-33-33-11, very expressed introvert, moderate sensing, feeling, slightly perceiving, Scorpio.

Gina Rath 07-30-2002 10:42 PM

Website

I am also finding this interesting. I was feeling rather sad that I didn't fall into the Artistic category. But since I see that I fall into the same category as Tim, INTP, I have artistic hope! My numbers are very strange: 100 33 44 22. I'm surprised that I ever come out of my house (or should I say, my mind).

I found one website that has info on each type that doesn't get too technical. However, I can't account for its accuracy. http://www.personalitypage.com/portraits.html

Timothy C. Tyler 07-30-2002 10:55 PM

numbers

My numbers were 1-36-24-36... does this imply I'm in touch with my feminine side?

Linda Ciallelo 07-30-2002 11:48 PM

I'm an INFP . I'm an Aries. My numbers were 89-44-33-11. I was surprised to see that I am in the commonest group here. That "never" happens anywhere else.

There is a thing about being right or left brain dominant. Supposedly if you are left brained, you are good at language and if you're right brained you are good at spatial relations. The quickest way to tell is to clasp your hands in front of you in your normal way, and see what thumb is on the top. If it's your right thumb, you are right brain dominated. If left, then left brained. For each person there is only one thumb that will feel correct. It has nothing to do with whether you are right- or left-handed either. Supposedly people with their right thumb on top cannot be hypnotized.

I will include some reference material on the subject of right brain function. Refer to this link.

Margaret Port 07-31-2002 11:55 AM

This is really interesting. I am also a Tiger. I wonder where that fits in the scheme of things. Another variable. Hmm, let's see, personality type x star sign x Chinese years. More work for Cynthia! I checked the website which explains the personalities (INFP) and I can't wait to show my husband. I've finally got a valid reason why I don't do housework, I'm a perfectionist! I think my 21 year-old son must be one as well. He has just spent over an hour explaining to me how I must check every millimeter of my latest painting to make sure it is perfect. I am going to test him next!

Mike McCarty 07-31-2002 12:28 PM

I am an INTJ (described as "the scientist"), a Chinese RAT, and a Scorpio. Which I guess explains why when faced with three bags of groceries to be taken into the house, I will spend 10 min. devising a plan to do it in one trip. Then spending another 30 minutes cleaning up the BBQ sauce which expoded on the kitchen floor. I hate that.

Michael Fournier 07-31-2002 12:44 PM

Left brain vs right barin

Yes, it is true that there are left-brain dominant and right-brain dominant people. But except for a very few, most people are not that extreme one way or the other. Those that are extremely one way or the other usually have a difficult time in everyday life, although they may be extremely gifted in a single area.

And although one side of the brain does control certain functions, it is not as simple as if you are left-brain dominant, you will act one way or excel in a certain function set, and if right-brain dominant, another. First of all, one side is usually only slightly more dominant than the other, and traits within one side of the brain may be stronger in one individual than another.

Also you can have very strong traits from both sides of your brain. And even have one trait that is specifically a right-brain function, that is extremely strong, but be primarily left-brain dominant in every other way.

Science has a long way to go yet before they fully understand the workings of the human brain. At best these tests can only be a guide, and at worst, mean nothing at all.

Khaimraj Seepersad 07-31-2002 01:30 PM

Michael,

The responses here are great fun and it wouldn't bother me if the tests flatlined.

Linda, I did the clench fist bit, right thumb. Now look very closely into my eyes...@@@@@@@@@@

Mike, you have just made sense out of my habit of cleaning local clay, and the time I took to figure out how to do it cleanly and efficiently. Actually that INTJ stuff has also explained to me why I love to paint.

It is the joy in observing and figuring out how light affects objects. How light creates mood, and what tracks a thought leaves on a person's face. Fine Art is the ultimate form of observation and record. You can even go smaller, with a microscope or electron microscope.

Thank you, Cynthia and Tim, I can focus even more efficiently now. More properly directed seeing.

Linda Ciallelo 07-31-2002 02:26 PM

Khaimraj,

I am right thumbs up also, so you can't hypnotize me. :)

Linda

Stacey Peterson 08-08-2002 02:49 PM

Very Interesting! I am an INFP, and in the majority for once. I make my living as a Chemical Engineer, and am often in the minority. While working for ExxonMobil a few years ago, I took the Meyers-Briggs in a training class, and we were separated into groups based on personality type. In a class of 30 people, I was the only "I", standing on the opposite side of the room from 29 ESTJ's! Everyone joked that I wasn't meant to be an engineer. Little did they know that they were probably right - my goal is to someday quit engineering and support myself as an artist.;)

ReNae Stueve 08-08-2002 08:34 PM

Right thumb up

I was also "right thumb up". I wonder how many of us are left-handed vs. right-handed. I, being left-handed had a hard time finding a palette that fit well. I ended up having a plexiglass one cut at the local "Sam Flax" art supply store. I love using the clear surface and is very comfortable.

Patt Legg 08-08-2002 11:16 PM

Well, that was something. I am ISFJ so they say. I must admit that I had never taken the test. I found it quite interesting. And they always thought it was just "moodiness".

As for the question whether or not I am in agreement with this estimation, I stand on the 5th as paragraph 2 speaks of my low profile.
