Decipher Sargent (and others)
Sargent's portraits of three figures
What are those common elements in design of these painting? http://www.jssgallery.org/Paintings/...r_Children.htm http://www.jssgallery.org/Paintings/...es_Vickers.htm http://www.jssgallery.org/Paintings/...am_Sisters.htm |
Each painting shows two people bonded physically and psychologically plus a third person who seems set apart and detached. Gorgeous paintings, love Sargent!

The key to the secret of...
Laurel:
Very well said. This kind of analysis is a basic training for us. The key to the secret of Mr.Kinstler's design is he mastered the spirit of great artists, especially Sargent and Zorn. Then he developed his own distinguished stile. Try if you can trace an analogy between a work of Sargent and this: http://www.npg.si.edu/exhibit/hepburn/latecareer.html http://www.theplayersnyc.org/ http://jssgallery.org/Other_Artists/...n_atelier.html http://www.anderszorn.info/portraits/tof88.html http://jssgallery.org/Other_Artists/...27s_Mother.htm http://www.abcgallery.com/S/serov/serov117.html http://www.abcgallery.com/R/repin/repin43.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Pavlov_nesterov.jpeg http://www.flickr.com/photos/jayceman/241045378/ |

Decode
It is not possible to decode all the secrets of an art work, although some secrets are easier to be probed, but have not been disclosed.
Now, look at those paintings you are so familiar with, were written, lectured, or explained as the "final secret". A question still remain: Is there an undisclosed design code (pattern), plays an importrant role in whole or in detail, for all these following, and many more master works? http://jssgallery.org/Paintings/Lady_Agnew.htm [url]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Repin_Cossacks.jpg |
Sorry, WB, I have no idea. But I do want to thank you for posting all the links to these beautiful portraits.

We may cite the adage, "Nothing in the world is difficult for one who sets his mind to it." To cross the threshold is not difficult, and mastery, too, is possible provided one sets one's mind to the task and is good at learning.
Knowledge is a matter of science and no dishonesty or conceit whatsoever is permissible. What is required is definitely the reverse - honesty and modesty. Complacency is the enemy of study. We cannot really learn anything until we rid ourselves of complacency. Our attitude towards ourselves should be "to be insatiable in learning" and towards others "to be tireless in teaching". (Mao) Albert Einstein: "Whoever undertakes to set himself up as a judge of Truth and Knowledge is shipwrecked by the laughter of the gods." Julie: Your attitude--honesty and modesty, "to be insatiable in learning", is better than one who pretends "as a judge of Truth". |

" Mrs. Asher B. Wertheimer" and 漸
Viewing Sargent's Mrs. Asher B. Wertheimer , one can relates its handling of value, notably, from her right hand to left hand, to I-Ching's Hexagram 漸.
Hexagram 53 is named 漸 (ji |
This essay is written by my friend, a talented "riddle solver", Mr.T (Let's talk):
What I said maybe is a nonsense: You said Ena and Betty, Daughters of Asher and Mrs. Wertheimer in his wife's right are crooked mouth. I have noticed other paintings of him, Mrs. Cazalet and Children of Edward and Victor in the mouth's left corner are crooked. Let us make some speculations: (1) Because of the influence of popular impressionism , people pay more attention to their environment. and light, this let Sargent painted both mouthes distorted in the dark side. You can observe, there is at the top of dark light or when the lower lip and cheek, while the distortion caused by the false impression of the mouth. To this false impression, in the eyes of the Impressionist seems true. This is why mouthes of children and young girls are less of distortion. They are in a positive light, and their faces are fuller, it is not easy to see the line of contrast. (2) It maybe is because of that these are some upper class. At that time, the lady showed slight towards the artist. For the performance of their elegance and reserved manner, their mouth would distorted a little unconsciously. (3) these may be family trait. Artist must not only deal with reality to maintain the original shape, but not looks ugly. Otherwise, can not get the money, ha ha. 我一无所知,哈哈。瞎说一下: 你说的 Ena and Betty, Daughters of Asher and Mrs. Wertheimer 中夫人的右嘴角是歪的。我注意到他的另一幅画 Mrs. Cazalet and Children Edward and Victor 中的夫人的左嘴角是歪的。 让我们做几个猜测: (1)由于萨金特深受印象主义影响,对光线和人物所处环境比较注重。那两个嘴都 |
Viewing Sargent's "Mrs. Asher B. Wertheimer" for 3 months
Much obliged for the joint effort of New Orlean Art Museum and Charlotte Mint Museum, I had the rare opportunity to view many of master works, especially by Sargent, Mary Cassatt.
The color in "Mrs. Asher B. Wertheimer" is similar to one of his representative work, portrait of Mrs Swinton, http://jssgallery.org/Paintings/Mrs_George_Swinton.htm which is a turning point for him, bringing many commission for the artist, who wrote a letter to acknowledge it. This comparision may tell us that he, perhaps Mrs. Asher B. Wertheimer also, intended to emulate the previous one, but did not satisfy both of them. Since I viewed more than 12 times in the museum, gradually I found out some weak spots. The second portrait is more successful . First time I took a close look and fall love to Mary Cassatt's work, admiring the transparency in her oil. |
