Thanks for the thorough description and the great suggestion. I can see how putting on classes is not only a great "side" income, but a way to stay connected with the community.

I really appreciate you sharing the experience, and I am going to look seriously at doing something similar.

Question - how did you get the classes going to begin with? An ad or flyer?

I put a series of ads in the newspaper with examples of my work and what I was teaching. I received about half of my students from that and the other half from the sign that I put up in front of my studio/school. I put several of those "real estate" style signs in the front that said things like "Art Lessons Here" and "Learn to Paint and Draw". I also told the new students as they signed up that I would give them $5 off of their tuition if someone that they recommended signed up. That provided me with three students that I may not have gotten. I also got a couple of students by going to the local elementary school and giving an art demonstration to a couple of the classes. It gave me the opportunity to meet many of the teachers and tell them about what I do. I also received a couple of commissions from the teachers. It has really been a positive experience overall!
