Hughes Easel, $600
This grand Hughes easel is available on ebay for $600.
If you have the studio space for this giant model, you cant' beat the price anywhere.

Chris,
I am looking for a bigger and better easel for my studio. Right now I have a rather small, unsteady H- frame easel, the low budget variety. I have been considering the sorg. What is your opinion of this monster hughes easel. Is it a bit overkill? I do have the space for it in my studio but I'm not sure if such a large easel would just be overwhelming.

I don't know, Cynthia. It's just enormous. It would probably be great for Sergio or someone who paints giant canvases or for anyone who who has the room.
If I had the space, I'd have bought it yesterday.

Do it!
That's much better than the one you've been considering.
John Sanden and Morgan Weistling have Hughes easels, they are perfect for both small and big paintings.
If you visit http://www.hugheseasels.com/ you will see how it works at the bottom of the page. I cannot afford one because of the price of the dollar in my country, but I'll certainly get one as soon as possible.

Caution . . .
I looked at this, too. The $600 is a starting bid with 3+ days to go. It may not be the purchase price. Also, the seller doesn't state what shipping costs would be. If you are considering it, you may want to contact the seller directly and get a shipping quote. The Sorg easel, on the other hand, includes shipping in the price of $550.
That said, if the Hughes is the easel you want, the (potential) price is fantastic. There may not be a lot of bids on such an item. You can tell e-bay what your top bid would be and then cross your fingers.

I have a Sorg and while I'm happy with it I'd love to have this Hughes, in part because it seems like it would be more stable width-wise and less capable of falling over and clunking me when I move it around my studio. I also love the side to side action of the Hughes, which the Sorg lacks.

This easel looks so tempting to me. Two days ago I just got a commission for a 9ft x 10 ft mural. I occassonally do murals on polyflax mural canvas which I staple to my wall. It's a great system to work on the mural in my studio on my time instead of working in the clients home. The murals are usually very detailed and between teaching and my portrait schedule I usually end up painting a mural at unconventional times like late at night , early on a Sunday , you know , basically times when a client wouldn't want me hanging around. The problem with being stapled to the wall ( the canvas not me) is that I end up laying on the floor in order to paint along the bottom. But after I thought about using this easel there was a whole new set of problems like building a support to apply this large of a canvas to before I could put it on the easel. Nothing is ever easy.
Also I have a shoulder injury, torn tendon on my painting arm, and being able to move any canvas around easily sounds great. Wait a minute- why did I take on this huge job with a bad shoulder ! The doctor took an x ray and said I had the shoulder of someone MUCH older than me then sent me off for an MRI. The results showed a tear but I don't see the doctor until next week so I don't know what is he is going to do.
Well the show must go on. I have already adjusted some of my working habits to accomodate this bum shoulder . I'll just have to figure something out. As far as the easel goes, I 'm looking into shipping charges. The Sorg is probably a better price for me if it includes shipping. I just bought a Cannon Rebel and I would like a longer lens too. Let see... a lens or an easel? Did someone just say nothing is ever easy? Oh ya, that was me!
One thing is for sure though, there is no better job , no better life than being an artist!

So Sad!
It seems this item was withdrawn from bidding early, and is no longer available. Darn, I was about to place a bid!
I had a delightful telephone conversation with Mr. Don Andrews, who manufactures these unique easels. He encouraged me to bid, and as soon as I returned to Ebay, I noticed bidding was suddenly closed on this item.
This equivalent easel, brand new, costs more than four times as much as the starting bid of $600.00. It will take months, if not years to set aside that kind of money for one of these dream easels; but why not? I will start budgeting, and dreaming.
Sorry for the sad news, Boo-hoo, (Cynthia, I was hoping you got it, but I don't think you did either, as there were no bids registered).
Garth

Perhaps it wil be listed again. Molly, thanks so much for clarifying the bid thing! That easel is probably a hard thing to sell, because of its size.
I think though that once someone bids, the seller isn't allowed to withdraw the item.
